How to stay in shape when your metabolism slows down at our age?

It’s hard losing weight. Everything I eat sticks on me. When I was younger a little exercise went a long way , but, now that’s not working. I only managed to lose a couple of pounds then I usually gain them back. Just want some tips if you have any. Thanks!

I go through the same struggles. I noticed the weight gain is always just around my waist area.. I read somewhere that gut health is important in helping your body digest food properly, so im now taking probiotics and paying attention to how my body responds to certain foods I eat. I eliminated dairy which always made me feel bloated, and so far, I'm more regular and my body feels better, even though I haven't seen much of a difference in weight yet, but then again, its only been 2 weeks. But still, I feel better.

I feel probiotics helps me as well. I have bloat problems and I agree diary makes it worse . I’m trying to eat better but it’s not easy . I do work out more.

@Bluesea600 Hi I had to change my diet. No more cakes candies, ice cream, and other junk food. Fruit is dessert. I eat lots of non starchy vegitables.I eat carbs but I am careful not to overdo them. It's not fun but I have been able to maintain my weight eating like this.at

I think vegetables are great and filling too. Junk foods make me gain weight automatically.

Being on bipolar meds and anti estrogen pills to prevent my breast cancer coming back on top of aging has been a trifecta worst case scenario for my 65lbds weight gain which I am slowly bringing down via the intermittent fasting monitoring app zero and decreasing carbs and portions.

I’m glad you’re doing better now. I heard intermittent fasting does wonders. Exercise on treadmill might help . I joined a gym to loose some pounds . Good luck !

Hi Bluesea600, try the Intermittent Fasting (IF) diet. It's doable for anyone and you will start to see the benefits very quickly. Please look it up online and give it a try. I did it and it works.

I should give it a try but sometimes I have to eat a light snack late at night. Maybe I’ll try it soon. Thanks !

@Inspiredcup I did IF for a few months and lost a lot of weight. Lost a lot of hair too. So be careful and take it slow, if you do try IF.

I agree, you have to be careful, but eat sensibly during the eating window, and even whilst in the fasting window one must take plenty of fluids.. water etc. to stay hydrated.

I have moved to a Whole Foods plant based diet close to 4 years ago. I have still put on weight during working from home for a year now but I feel quite well and healthy. I just joined a gym a week ago so I feel that continuing with a healthy diet plus enough movement should work for me. Fingers crossed. I have read Women’s Body’s women’s wisdom and found it a great resource for all things women!

I feel the same! When I was in my 30's I could lose 30lbs in 6 months. I'm 40 now and trying to lose the weight I gained because of my pain medicines. I count every calorie and try to eat healthy things, no unhealthy snacks. The weight just feels stuck!

I agree with you. When I was in my 30s a little walking helped me lose weight. Now I have to do strenuous exercise to lose a pound . Since my mother became diabetic around my age it concerns me more to get fit. I slouched about my weight in my 30s which I regret. Now I’m trying harder but I wasn’t doing great before. I lost 5 pounds which helps but it’s still not enough .

I do face exact same problem.I am a rice eater so slowly switched to quinoa.I walk 40 mins a day thrice a week .I love walking outdoors also helps in stress relief.I observed lately due to work from home i had been sitting more so i just got a standing desk hoping that will help with posture as well as i read standing helps in burning calories.

Since i have knee pain i cannot jog or run so only option is yoga without putting much stress on knees and plant diet and walking .

I have bad posture too and my couch doesn’t help. I’m hoping to get a new couch soon. I have been forcing myself to go to the gym which is great . I used to walk slow on the treadmill and it didn’t help at all . Ever since I used higher settings I’ve lost a few pounds . I try to eat less but I still should improve my diet . My biggest concern is blood sugar issues. Unfortunately, my mother developed diabetes around my age . She was overweight so maybe I’ll have a chance to avoid it by taking care of my health and weight .

The past year in particular has been bad for my weight. I'm afraid to get on the scale; I know things don't fit the way they used to. I've kept up with exercise and haven't changed a huge amount of my diet, but I've always been sedentary, and the pandemic has been an excuse to be more so. I lost 140 pounds over a decade ago just through diet and exercise, but I know it isn't going to be as easy now as it was then, and it was hard then. But I don't want to be trapped in a body I feel ashamed of (like I used to be). I know that's less important than we think, and I'm not super self-conscious, but I want to feel fit, and I haven't for a while now. I feel like there's a feedback loop about being around people and wanting to present well physically, and now a lot of those motivations are broken.

I’m soo sorry, I had to push myself to work out because I don’t want future health problems like my mother . You can do it, go slow like do 15 minutes of exercise daily then you’ll get used to it and it won’t be so hard . You have to motivate yourself by thinking positively. Just tell yourself that you’re strong and you’ll believe it. When I think negative it sets me back but thinking positive always helps. We all have struggles but our health should be our number one priority in life. I let go of myself but I always try . If I didn’t try I would be heavier than I am now . You can do it!
