I know what I feel to be the basics. But at the same time I’m confused. Is credit important? I don’t have a credit score. How do I get a credit score? I assumed I needed to get a credit card and use only a very same percent of my limit. That way I would have a good score. But why is that necessary for an apartment? Do you get the lease ahead of time so you can read it or is it just a meet up time to read/sign it? That will make me feel rushed and I won’t read it carefully then. Can things be added to the lease? They don’t get the deposit until you sign the lease right? Also the pet fee is it refundable? How does renters insurance work? What else do I need to know?

Hey there, do you have any rental advisory services you can call for free advise in your country. You will need specific information that relates to your local regulations. I’m sure there should be some support services for people in your situation that need help understanding these specifics. Try searching for free rental regulation advisory services in your country and state.. that might be a good starting point.

@Shawnawna You’ll be able to find a lot more info by googling. Landlords look at credit scores to see if you pay your bills on time. You can request a copy of the lease before you sign. The lease may include an addendum that either you or the landlord add to the lease paperwork. Make sure you are provided a copy of the lease at the time of signing. It’s not as scary as it seems, but it’s good you’re asking questions. Best of luck.

*Hugs* It's okay! It can be scary figuring everything out <3 No one starts out knowing all this stuff, and lots of people even stumble into these things and don't figure it out till years later. It's great you are thinking about these things now and trying to find out as much as you can.

Credit is important and there are lots of ways to grow it. The best thing to do is to first make sure you pay all your bills on time! If you have a car payment then you are already building credit! When you get your new place you will be building credit! A good way to build credit is to get a credit card with your bank or a credit union and use it for your gas or groceries. Things you know you can afford and buy each month then pay off your statement each month. This allows you to build credit without adding any extra bills.

While some pet deposits are refundable I wouldn't count on getting them back. Places can be really odd about this, but if they do that's always nice!. You normally sign the lease agreement when you get it but you will go look at places first. Look at many places and when you find one you like ask them to see a copy of the lease agreement. You can discuss it then without signing right away. Then you can keep looking or tell them you have one other place to see go home and think about it. :)

Remember they are not going to rush you. And taking your time to read an agreement just demonstrates how mature and serious you are. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. You will often have to pay the first and last month down when you pay first (just a reminder) But you do not pay anything until you sign. <3
