New friends

Why does it seem so much harder to find new friends as you get older. The friends you've made up until that point are all the same usually. They say they will always be there for you, Garda yards yards and boom one day they just aren't anymore. What happened you ask???? Life! Life happened. At my age (mid thirties) I'm not wanting to do the things I did when I was younger to meet new people. However I'm too young to not go out and meet new people. Basically I need new friends. My support circle is basically nonexistent. I can't count on anyone it feels like. I don't want to feel this way. I miss having coffee and hanging out with some good company. As desperate as it sounds... I'm putting it out there that new applicants for the friendzone may apply in the comments. Haha just kidding (sorta). My problem is I'm too nice and people tend to only befriend me to use me in some way. I know that are some genuine people out there and I'm hoping I can find just one or two of them.... is that so much to ask?!? I want to go out and have fun while I'm still young. I look forward to reading the comments I get haha. Maybe a little nervous too. Thanks for reading. Take care.

@DamagedOne13

I think friendship these days is harder at all ages. We have become a society so attached to our tech gadgets, phone, computer, Ipad etc that we have lost touch with ourselves and others. If you look around it is rare to find people truly engaged in conversation with each other without checking their phone or texting someone. We have so many ways to communicate but we are more distant from each other than we have ever been and instead of connecting us these things are isolating us from true interaction that is required to build friendships. Also, I think due to all that is going on in the world we also have become a nation of fear, to reach out and risk knowing someone. We are crippled by our what if’s and thus we sit in our respective places and connect where it seems most non-threatening on the computer or texting or chatting online etc. Sorry for the text-wall and you can consider me a friend? smiley

I feel the same way. I have not made a new friend since I graduated from university. Maybe my close co-workers can be considered friends? But I do not talk to them after hours so I don't think so. My friend circle consists of people I met in elementary and high school. I'm in my 30s as well so that just shows between then and now I really haven't made any new friends.

I completely understand. As I've gotten older I find that relationships are much more complex than what they were when we were younger. Not only because we have matured and aged, but because the nature of relationships these days has transformed thanks to technology. It does sometimes feel that people are out there to use others, and I have experienced this personally as well. Healthy relationships involve give and take, and a level of trust and openness. Trust is hard.

Just be you and enjoy your life and the right ones will gravitate. I'm always open for new friendships. Feel free to reach out :)

I can relate to this. Gave most of my 20s to a friend and her family when the dad was deported, only to have her ghost me after my mother died, and I needed support in return. I’ve not really bothered with friendships since - except one person who recently deeply hurt me. It’s so hard to make friends in your 30s, it feels like everyone is happy with their current friendship groups or families and aren’t really looking!

I agree!! I'm also looking for new friends and this pandemic made everything worse. I don't even know how to meet people anymore.

I totally understand that. I live in a small town due to my job and I don't trust anyone here. I've watched every one I know lie and stab each other in the back on a regular basis...and I'm not putting myself in that mix! I

I experienced that. And thats the reason I have my boundaries when it comes to being friends. The toxic feeling is just too much for me.

I'm new here and part of the reason why is to make friends. It's so true that it's harder to make 'em as we get older. I have one close friend but because of the pandemic and the distance, we don't hang out too often. It sucks but sometimes when difficult things happen, you'll find out who your real friends are. Now more than ever we need that close support circle around us. Feel free to reach out :)
