How does therapy help? I have been through 6 different therapists and I don't see how it helps.

@TheDude0156 The therapists I know (in real life, not here at 7 Cups) tell me that therapy works by applying specialist knowledge about how the mind works. This is a complex combination of knowledge and skill that not many therapists are good at.

So, unfortunately, it is very possible to go through six different therapists without finding one who really knows what they are doing.

There are several different approaches to therapy, such as cognitive, person-centred, psychodynamic, and so on, which work in different ways. There has been some research that shows the skill of the therapist is more important than the approach they happen to use.

It may be that you are more likely to find a good therapist who can really help if you look for one who has a good reputation among doctors, or one who is able to charge high prices, or one who has a long waiting list, or one who has several decades of experience, or one who is a specialist in a particular type of therapy, or some combination of those things.

I must have had only one type then. All we did was talk. That did not help me at all.

@TheDude0156 I see. You felt like that you weren't helped because you did not find the session beneficial to you.

@TheDude0156 Yes, sometimes when they don't know what to do they just run out the clock with talk, and of course that doesn't help you at all.

@RarelyCharlie Yes. You are right that there are different therapy approaches. And not every therapist will be skilled in each and everyone of them. Different individuals or situations respond to different approaches. A lot of the times, there is a science behind it. It is definitely a skill as well. And I see communication as a skill and an art. Thank you for sharing this.

No. But once in 10 years the planets align and the sun blesses you to find the one therapist you can REALLY talk to
