Embracing the Journey of Aging
Greetings everyone!
I m starting this discussion here about aging and the different experiences we go through as we grow older. Aging is a natural and beautiful part of life, but it can also come with its own set of challenges. Let's us come together to share our thoughts, concerns, and tips on embracing the journey of aging.
To kick things off, I'd love to hear from you: What are some of the joys you've discovered in the process of getting older? Have you found any effective strategies for staying mentally and physically healthy? Maybe you have questions or concerns you'd like to discuss?
Remember, we're all here to support and learn from each other. So, let's keep the conversation respectful and uplifting. Feel free to share your stories, advice, or simply lend a listening ear to those who may be seeking guidance.
Looking forward to hearing from you all!
@AutisticYouth
Thank you so much for doing this thread! It's a great idea since we all feel the effects of aging. Now to your question
What are some of the joys you've discovered in the process of getting older? Have you found any effective strategies for staying mentally and physically healthy? Maybe you have questions or concerns you'd like to discuss?
Some of the joys I experience whilst aging are I feel more confident, care much less what other think about me = more freedom, I appreciate time alone even more than when younger, I am more grateful and more tolerant. I could go on and on, aging has brought many benefits for me.
Strategies to stay healthy I have a daily routine of exercise and meditation, brain training/brain games, daily stretching, yoga at least twice a week, eat healthy. Volunteering here helps me a lot to stay healthy mentally and emotionally because I get mentally challenged here but feel also supported and experience a great deal of kindness on this site what contributes to making me feel hopeful for the future.
@amiablePeace77 awesome ami
@amiablePeace77 seconding volunteering. Great way to stay active being helpful and connected to one's community!
@AutisticYouth Time passes quite quickly when your older which is pretty handy for getting through tough and boring times.
@Tobias5 that is understandable ageing can be tough but know you dont have to go thrpough all that alone
I HATE aging!
@goodSpruce3041 i can validate with your emotions agieng can be exhausting an overweljming phase but know we will go through this together
@goodSpruce3041. My partner hates it too.
What are some of the joys you've discovered in the process of getting older?
One thing I've found as I get older is that I really enjoy sitting at home and not being around a lot of people. I'm not sure if this would be joyful for everyone, but for me, I find people invite drama and I've seemed to have lost my tolerance for drama as I age. Sitting home, or being out in public as little as possible is very joyful for me.
Have you found any effective strategies for staying mentally and physically healthy?
I have an exercise/workout routine that I incorporate daily for my physical well being. I also try to eat right and drink plenty of water. I use 7cups to help with mental and emotional health.....
@CyclingThroughLife those are some really nice stuffs to try!
@CyclingThroughLife
I think exercise and eating healthy can make a big difference in how we feel. Do you have any favorite exercise? My favorite is Zumba aerobics! 😃
@amiablePeace77
My favorite workouts are spin classes as well as riding my road bike during the nicer weather. I also enjoy lifting weights.
@AutisticYouth. I actually like menopause now that I got through the difficult part of it. I like that I don’t worry as much about my appearance as I did when I was young. I also don’t worry as much about what other people think either.
The only part of agíng that I have liked is seeing my two kids marry and have children of their own. I am waiting this on the train leaving one of the two who were gave one of our cars.
The rest has sucked. My neurologist found a tumor in my spinal cord. It's now two surgeries later and I have many side effects that severely limit me, physically and cognitively. I have had to give up my motorcycles, fly fishing and cross country skiing. I had to retire. I accept all of this, but it's not how I had dreamed retirement to be. Oh yes one more surgery in the beginning of the new year
.
My strategies? Exercise, Reading, this group and my Buddhist Sangha .
@dadalo
I'm sorry you're not able to do the activities you enjoy doing because of the surgical side effects and that your dream how retirement will be will not come true the way you wanted it 💙. Nice that you found a Buddhist Sangha and I hope it helps you to find the good in your situation which might not be that visible at times, especially when in pain.
I wish you already now all the best for the new surgery and hope things will be much better afterwards.
Thank you so much, Ami, for the good wishes. there is always another path, I think.
@AutisticYouth I love being in my 50's I am so much less afraid of everything now.
Many things that poisoned my life when I was younger, well actually they are all gone.
I outgrew problems gained new ones!
Learned I could survive a whole lot!
