Misconceptions and discrimination against the elderly: let's reflect about it together

Hello, today I've read an article and i want to share part of it with you all.

"As people enter old age, they face challenges. Ageism, which involves stereotyping and discrimination against the elderly, leads to misconceptions about their abilities. Although elderly poverty has been improving for decades, many older people may be detrimentally affected by the 2008 recession. Some elderly people grow physically frail and, therefore, dependent on caregivers, which increases their risk of elder abuse."

yes, yes and yes.... it certainly doesn't help to be getting 'fully matured' , developing visible disabilities, AND being obese (another source of bigotry) AND have a psychiatric or Brain Chemistry Disorder (PTSD) from Social Trauma~! omg,,, it's like a viscious circle~!

@GusteeMoon123

Hi Gus, I am sorry to hear that you experienced these things.

I hope that sharing about it and knowing that somewhere someone else may have faced the same, would let you feel less alone.

We also have disability community in case you may be interested in it, hopefully 7 cups can be of wide support to you.

There are also discussions running in rooms, I give you the link for disability HERE and please feel free to check the discussions calendar as well HERE

Thanks for sharing, take care!

@BeyondTheInvisible

i don't think i mentioned feeling lonely, or left out , or any of those kinds of things...

i have a favorite saying: Wanting what one doesn't have, and Having what one doesn't want, are the sources of Suffering.

i'm no longer in the business of Suffering, and if it sounded that way, i can't explain it... i was merely responding to the topic at hand.

otherwise, thanks for sharing your compassion with me, and hope i meet you around sometime...

@BeyondTheInvisible hi I never thought I would get old but it is really happening lol.

I find that now I know why adults feel less useful, because younger people want to do it their way. That is how innovation happens. But by not paying attention to experienced people then their wisdom is lost.

@soulsings

Thanks for sharing your point of view Soul.

So you did not experience any of the negative and difficult situations mentioned in my thread?

Nobody you know that had to face them?

@BeyondTheInvisible well I am confronted with those problems wherever I look but I am insulated from them. In the working world but there there is much discrimination. I try to surround myself with people that are as open minded as I am. Perhaps that helps me face those problems less

@BeyondTheInvisible

Hi Beyond, happy Friday, i wish you a wonderful weekend. smiley

What about misconceptions and discrimination against the elderly?

enlightenedDid you ever experience a difficult situation due to your age?

Yes, when I young gentleman explained to me a device I never heard about before and I asked him "what is that?" he looked at me as if he wanted to say "Granny that's too difficult to you, let it be". He actually made a face, me too when I saw his cheeky

enlightenedDo you know someone that faced something similar? Yes, I have seen a number of elderly just being pushed away, ignored, being pressured e.g. at cashiers when not able to find their purse fast, in companies when they asked for information, other places where they asked for help. They were treated like little children with no respect. I find this very sad.

it is good to have a sense of one's place in the greater scheme of things,,, but i find it more helpful to talk about personal experiences... rather than the nefarious "THEY"....

Hi Gus: it's good, talk in the way you prefer to, like others will yes

We are not all the same and it is nice to give everyone same opportunity to express themself, right?

Cheers!
