How did you adapt to what happened around you this year? I tried to not react with anger and to monitor my thoughts to siderail the negative thoughts before they become entrenched.
Have you made any changes you're going to take forward into the new year? I am going to practice mindfulness as much as I am able which helps me see things as they are, not like the story the mind generates.

Nice that mindfulness helps you to see things as they are and not based on what your anger or other emotions tell you.

This year I have tried to not pity myself whilst showing more emotions around people, compared to last year. Also I have tried to use more courage in speaking to others and it's actually working pretty well; have several new friends including a best friend who supports me and helps me.
Along with my other friends who I gained in the year before. I am grateful for all of them, and trying to shoe my gratitude more to them.

I just kind of went along with everything. I didn't make the progress I was hoping for. It's taking so long. I've been asked to facilitate the creative writing group at the place where I go for peer-to-peer group meetings, because the person who is supposed to do it hasn't been coming in. She's been sick.

I have kind of learned to not let my husband get me frustrated nor change my atmosphere. Hopefully more mind control is what I want to take into the new year.

This has been a huge year of transition for me. I’ve been in education for 26 years. I spent the first 11 as a classroom teacher, then moved into a position where I mentored new teachers. I did that for 4 years, all the while going to school to earn my principal credentials. Then, I became a middle s school associate principal for four years. Then I took a job as a high school principal that required my family to move a few hours away. I decided it wasn’t for me after a year and wanted to return to mentoring. So, we moved back home and I got my old mentoring job back. I did that work from 2012 until just last June. Then the funding ran out. So, after 17 years away from standing in front of a classroom full of students, that’s exactly where I find myself now. The transition was brutal. I was not prepared for the work load. As an English teacher, there is so much grading. The planning is intense as well. I’ve been working 12 hour days as well as weekends. It’s just not sustainable. I feel like a first year teacher also over again. Lol. Things are smoothing out and getting better. I already have thoughts on what I will do differently next year. That said, if another opportunity comes along that isn’t teaching, but is still in education, I’ll jump on it.
Things that have helped me this year are leaning on my family for support. My wife has been amazing. My kids understanding. I’m a man of few friends, an introvert. However, I have made the effort to make friends at work and spend some time with colleagues outside of school hours. That has also helped. Even though I’m an introvert, I have found I still need people.

No one can just work! I so agree with you on working 12 hour days as well as weekends is simple not sustainable. Good that you had the support of your family and could make friends with colleagues outside school. We all need self care, fun and other people even if it's just mixing with others from time to time. I hope something good will come up for you soon!

Yes. This month I started some partial restructuring of my finances...will keep at it into mid-January at least. It could take longer. But it's the smart thing to do... When I'm done there will be a good nest egg for emergencies. That is something everyone should have, but all too many live without--even those who can afford to save & build one up.
