Do games really help older people stay mentally sharp or help them build acuity? Has any research been done showing evidence for it? I hope so because all too often, mental ability is something we start to lose just when we're in a situation where we most need it...
I don't currently play any games, but I've thought about taking up chess or go. Either game has a ton of strategy & tactics to learn if you want to just be a competent player, let alone a great one. Between the two, I lean towards chess. On the other hand, if you want to learn something you can make money with the only choice is Texas Hold'em!
@slowdecline48
I think chess is an amazing game to develop the ability to see things from another person's perspective and learn strategy & tactics.
If you are interested in reading more about research work, please check here: https://www.unisq.edu.au/news/2021/05/gaming-for-older-people and here
"Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London found that playing a daily 10 minute game challenging reasoning and memory skills could benefit for older people"
@WharfRat
You made some good points about anything is better than sitting idle, having a variety of games and physical activity! I believe that no matter at what age we are we need to challenge our brain and body to stay fit.
Glad that you enjoy the word games here on 7cups, I hope you can play more in future.
Here is a link to free games from aarp https://games.aarp.org/
What games....
I've been playing PCH online games for over a couple years now. And I play Microsoft's solitaire collection...been doing that one for at least 3 maybe 4 years now. Maybe even longer.
For me, they are stress relievers.
@amiablePeace77
1. As effectiveness goes, I understand the most effective games (or collections of games) for intellectual fitness are Lumosity (PC and phones), Dual N-Back games, Brain Age 1 and 2 for the Nintendo DS (dirty chip second hand), and "Mind Training" phone games like Elevate, Peak, and Mind Games Pro
Also this site, which has tons of free puzzles for any taste: https://www.braingle.com
2. I play many puzzle games on PC from Steam, like Mini Metro, Crayon Physics, Pedestrian, Linelight... and many other small games. They are very cheap, "easy to learn, difficult to master". Those four I mention are real gems. I think there are phone versions too.
I like to play chess on chess.com and lichess.org There is always someone someplace in the world at your same level, willing to play. The problem with chess is that it's very frustrating to play with a better player, and boring with a less good one. These sites have thousands of people all the time, and pair you with one of your same level. What makes for a challenging but not frustrating game. Highly recommended...
@HealingTalk
Thank you for sharing all these links. It's good to have a variety of games so it does not get boring. Could not open the lichess.com though.
@amiablePeace77
You are welcome!
Thank you for your kind words!
It's lichess.org
I like it better than chess.com. It has a nicer interface and less clutter, as it's 100% free, so no ads of "getting premium" and things like that.
They also have a chess engine made from the typical moves of thousands of players in response to each situation. It's called "Maia" and comes in different levels.
So you can play against a computer that "thinks" like a human.
Very cool...
