50+ community Check-in October 19-22, 2020

Hello lovelies in the 50+ community, it’s Monday again and I hope you will all enjoy a wonderful week

Self-compassion means offering yourself some friendliness, generosity, and sympathy. It is not self-pity; rather, it is a recognition and acceptance of your humanness, your imperfection, and your suffering.
Next time when you're the negative self-talk kicks in begin to “talk back” to the critical voice in your head but with a gentle voice. Tell the voice that you understand that the voice is nervous, anxious, or worried about getting hurt, but that it is causing you unnecessary pain. Help your critical voice to reframe things , for example instead of “You’re a failure” use “You did the best you could” or “Noone is perfect”. After this give yourself a hug.
Please come back and share how this exercise went for you.

Newbie here; so not sure this is the right forum/thread to ask this but why are 18 yr olds invited to a 50+ chat forum? I would not feel at all comfortable with that sort of VERY wide age range mix. Nor would I be expcted to be invited/included to THEIR age group chats? Thank you for any clarification.
'50+ Discussion Topics Change 18+ over are welcome'
@independentCoconut8219
Welcome to 7cups and the 50+ community, glad to have you here .
The 50+ community deals predominantly with topics related to people over 50 but since we are an inclusive community everyone 18+ is welcome. It can be very helpful for younger people to hear about challenges older people face and how they deal with it, maybe even apply it to home, when having aging parents. For people 50+ it can be very helpful to hear, get ideas from younger people, meaning we complement each other. It's a win win situation in my opinion.
You are welcome to join any adult communities/discussions too.
@amiablePeace77, This was a good exercise for me. I have a brother in law who is a bully to me and others, and unfortunately I live with him and my sister. I just went through a bullying episode from him and don't know how to handle it. I have just been keeping quiet and avoiding him. It's been a troubling situation to me. I've been feeling rather sunk. So, while telling myself that I've been doing the best I could was a brief lift to my spirits, I did feel a brief lift. Hugging myself has never been something that worked for me but I did it anyway, in following your exercise.
@purpleTree4652
It's hard to get along with a bully, hugs. Remember we are always here for you
Glad that the exercise helped in some way.
This is a shg about bullying https://www.7cups.com/bullying/, Also TED has very good talk about it. https://www.ted.com/topics/bullying
I have negative images or concepts course through me at strange times. Like I shared, I followed Louise Hay's advice, and I inwardly told my mind , "thanks for sharing."
It is effective for me. I can put my strange thoughts to bed by that phrase. I feel more positive and effective. I don't have to put up with my mind's behavior for everything that it serves to me.
Giving myself a hug, and I do that often.
thanks from,
Diofono

It's an amazing idea to tell your thoughts "thanks for sharing", not pushing them away but acknowledging them. Thanks for sharing this!
@amiablePeace77
@amiablePeace77 I like the way you framed this. I'm going to try this simple phrase for the next few days, "Thanks for sharing." I tend to ignore or stuff the negative thoughts and feelings but this will help me acknowledge the thoughts and perhaps ease the painful emotions that accompany them.
