Hi 50+ people, I wish you an amazing week and hope there will be lots of moments of happiness. laughheart

Today I have a question for you:

enlightenedHow often do you ask yourself "Can I really do this? Many of those in their 50s think they are too old to do or try new things. On the contrary, this is the perfect time for you to start and try new things.

enlightenedWhen was the last time you learned a new skill and if you are comfortable to share, what was it?

@amiablePeace77 Hi Ami!

It's never too late to learn. Two years ago (when I was 70) my sister and I decided to start taking singing lessons. We'd been singing together in a folk group for several years, but professional lessons really made a difference.

I didn't start singing with a group until I started my first one about the time I turned 60. Fun!

How often do you ask yourself "Can I really do this? Many of those in their 50s think they are too old to do or try new things. On the contrary, this is the perfect time for you to start and try new things. I tend to doubt myself and my abilities when I am stressed and tired. I postpone decisions until I feel at peave.

enlightenedWhen was the last time you learned a new skill and if you are comfortable to share, what was it? I am working on doing Jigsaw puzzles. It is a mindless activity in words but full of visualization and colors.

@soulsings

I used to enjoy jigsaw puzzles and I had several that were really nice, Hallmark puzzles. But one day, when they were young, my children decided that it would be quite the challenge to mix several 500-1000 piece puzzles together and build each of them from this mixture. Well, it wasn't quite as easy as their thoughts would have it and sadly, I didn't feel up to the challenge either, so it's been a while since I've bought any puzzles. ButI have visited a few online pages where you can do jigsaw puzzles and it's quite fun too. Lot's easier to keep track of the pieces too. Thanks for the memory you stirred. laugh

@forko23 well kids always hope for the best. I guess you have to get the kids past the mixing stage.

Soul, I believe when tired and stressed our minds tends to catasthropize easily, so having a calm and clear mind allows us to see things from a better perspective and not through a magnifying glass.

Jigsaw puzzles are a good mindful activity to increase focus and train problem solving and some of them have so beautiful colours which are truly mood uplifting. Great thing to do.

How often do you ask yourself "Can I really do this? Many of those in their 50s think they are too old to do or try new things. On the contrary, this is the perfect time for you to start and try new things.

I ask myself at times, can I really do the things I would like to try and sometimes I find that I cannot. (My pogostick sits, gathering dust in a corner.) But I've tried several new things that others may have thought me too old for but I enjoy the adventure. I ask myself these days, if not now, then when? I'm 63 and in reasonably good health, as far as I know but I also know of people in a similar state who, one fine day, found out that they weren't as well off as they'd imagained. I'm trying a new restaurant toninght, Nepalese food, just for the adventure of it.

When was the last time you learned a new skill and if you are comfortable to share, what was it?

The last new skill I tried to learn is something I'm still working on and that's learning to speak a foreign language. I know bits and pieces of many but right now I'm practicing my Thai. I visited there earlier this year and I'm going back for an extended stay in a few months. I'd like to understand more and be better understood, myself, when I return. It's a challenge but a fun one. I hear people, near me, complain about foreign people here not being able to "speak the language", meaning English, so I'm doing my part to learn a bit of the native tongue, out of respect, for the places I visit.

@forko23

Life is an adventure so we never become to old for taking one. It shows that you are still curious and that's a good trait to have. Never tried Nepalese food but why not!? It can only enrich your knowledge and who knows, maybe it becomes one of your favorites. Would be nice to hear how it went.

Thailand is one of the nicest countries I have ever visited in my life, I hope you will enjoy your stay there when going. Showing natives that you are interested in them by learning some of their language will definitively be appreciated and it is good for you brain health too.

On the contrary, this is the perfect time for you to start and try new things. I don't think I have done that in a very long time. I don't think that right now would be a good time to try anything new, I am not well enough mentally or physically to try.

enlightenedWhen was the last time you learned a new skill and if you are comfortable to share, what was it? I dont remember. Possibly when I learned sign language about 15 years ago.

@Offmytrack

Offmytrack, sorry to hear you are not well atm, hugs. You are quite right, it's not a good time to start something new, it's the time to gather strength again. Hope you feel much better soon. 🧡

I wish that sign language would be taught at school, same as foreign languages. It is not only helpful to improve our world by allowing an easier communication for everyone but it has also several benefits like improving small motor skills.

Hey all, today is hard for me. I have fibro that is kicking my butt and a reaction to XOLAIR injections I get monthly. I'm nasty and hangry and very sensitive today. I'm achy and swollen and littlest things are bothering me,

To answer the question though I an learning a new language for 9 months now and am very pleased with my progress, I also may take flamenco lessons or tango lessons

I want to thank those who run and support the threads they help me vent and for that I am eternally grateful

@Dancersoul

Fibro is awful, HUGS, hope you will feel much better tomorrow 🧡.

Learning a new lesson is very helpful to keep your brain fit and I heard it also helps to protect from Alzheimer's. What language is it, if I may ask?

Wow, flamenco and tango are awesome dances. Would love to hear about your experience if you start a course.

I am very glad that the threads help you and also like to thank you for coming here to post.
