Coping tips as we age

Coping tips are important in our daily lives. Coping tips are navigating our life changes involving building resilience, managing the stress we have, and maintaining a sense of connection and well-being. Here are some practical coping skills to use as we age.

Start small: Use direct words like "I feel good today". Using a lot of I statements. ex: I will not let this upset me- I will be fine - I will manage through this.

Embrace the word " NO": Do not be afraid of saying no to a situation or to someone asking you to do something your not wanting to do. You do not owe anyone an explanation the word NO says it all.

Release any guilt: When feeling a sense of discomfort establish newer boundaries. It does not mean your doing anything wrong.

It is okay when we forget things as we age, a person's birthday or anniversaries. We all tend to forget things as we age. If you have a large task that is needing to be done, try breaking it down into tiny steps.

When you slowly forget something or someone it can give you anxiety. Combat forgetfulness by using reminders like a calendar, writing a to-do list. We need to accept we will not be able to do things like we use to when we  were younger. We need to not be hard on ourselves.

Aging brings physical shifts and emotional transitions. When we practice coping skills it will help you maintain balance, maintain a mental well-being, and have some type of independence. You can begin to accept things that you can not change, practice self-compassion, keep a positive outlook as you age, and treat the minor aging as a step up in life.
