Why is over 50 years old called the golden years

Do you ever wonder why, after being 50 years old, it is called the golden years? This phrase is called the golden years because it typically talks of people being retired, enjoying the leisure of their life, and having fulfilled their personal life. 

By the time we have reached 50, we have worked our lives in jobs we wanted and raised our children to be successful in their lives. By the time we reach 50, we have become financially able to live our lives in the savings we made from working, stocks we did growing up, and having money saved to be able to retire. Some people over 50 will continue to work to keep the money coming to survive living alone or just choose to work to keep busy with something to do rather than sitting home doing nothing.

The word "golden" has been used in history to signify a period of peace, prosperity, and harmony. When we retire we have time on our hands to do things we were not able to do growing up. We have more time to travel and enjoy the opportunities to see the world, without having to cut short our trips because we work. 

Once we are in our golden years, we still need to take care of our emotional and physical selves. We still need to exercise, eat right, and have periodic check-ups with our doctors. We begin to walk more, either in our community or in a park. Most who live in communities become friends with neighbors, where walking daily is done together.

We also keep our minds engaged in learning new hobbies or taking on a job being a volunteer somewhere, assisted living places with people our age who have no one to be there for them. People will work in places part-time to keep active and moving. There is so much to still enjoy in our golden years; just because we are growing older does not mean we stop doing what we love and become forgotten. You keep living life as you choose.
