It meant that my mother was always doing things for us and we didn't appreciate it. So, the only way we would notice all that she done for us was if she was gone, and the things weren't being done.

My great grandfather, whose family came to the U.S. from Scotland and were quite poor, used to tell me:
1) Don't buy it if you can't pay for it;
2) Take care of your dimes and your dollars will take care of themselves.
Wise words I live by. (And I pick up pennies to this day. Heads nor tails make any difference. Finding change, esp. dimes, let's me know Pop is watching over me. 🤗
