Russ Ewing's story is incredibly inspirational, but not in a way that would depress me/make me feel bad about myself due to his success, as he was so humble.
He was a Black journalist in Chicago in the 70s-90s... He became an investigative journalist, focusing on local injustices and true crime. Black people in particular knew him, and trusted him.
According to Wikipedia, he "became known as a go-between who negotiated more than 115 surrenders to police of wanted felons, often wanted for murder." Criminals would literally call him and ask for him to help them surrender peacefully. The camera crew would record the surrender, as Ewing would walk with them into the police station. Recording it deterred any police brutality, injustice or nefarious actions from occurring.
He sometimes said the quote to the criminals he met, ones who wanted to end their lives, go out in a blaze of gunfire, etc. His quote has stuck with me... if Ewing can inspire murderers to surrender themselves to police and not end their lives, I can keep on going too.
