Benefits of being a mid-life single?
Anyone care to share your thoughts on the benefits of being mid-life and single?
My marriage of 17 years ended a few years ago and I'm floundering in a "going nowhere" relationship. I really want to fully embrace being single, but I also feel I desperately want a life partner of some sort. I'm trying to separate myself from the desire to immediately get involved with another relationship. My logical and rational thinking knows that I REALLY need to take time to myself, be myself, be my own best friend, establish my own routines, etc. On the other hand, I've been partnered for so long, I'm feeling pretty lonely on my own.
Maybe you can help inspire me to embrace the joys of being single. They can be serious or funny. And THANKS!!!
I'll start with this benefit of being single:
The only person snoring in my bed at night is me. 😄
@GoingInCircles365
I think you are correct in your thinking that perhaps knowing yourself completely is not only better but helpful to not fall into any similar patterns of past relationships.
I feel many worry too much about being alone yes sometimes it can be lonely but IMO far too many find a new "close enough" relationship to fill the gap.
a few things is No more compromise on what is for dinner or what movie to see or anything....
NO having the small things that drive a person crazy in a relationship .......
did you take out trash / empty or start a dishwasher/ pick up the mail/ remember anything important like dates or appointments ...... the do not nag me but then complain why did you not remind me of X..... the back and forth of no one listening ...... i think my marriage lasted as long as it did simply cause he was traveling for work and i had enough time to miss him between being frustrated by the little things

Thanks for your reply!
I totally agree about not needing to worry about compromise or those little things that started out as trivial but now drive me bonkers 😝
Better be single than depending on a wrong partner. Your partner can leave you at anytime!! I am not afraid of being single. However, the thought of having a wrong husband (abusive husband or a husband who cheats on me) sends a shiver down my spine! Discover yourself, enjoy your hobbies!! :)
The main advantage: Freedom. You don't have to account for your conduct to someone else 24-7. If you feel like leaving your home at 5:30 p.m. & you eventually return after 9, there's no one to immediately blast you with "Where have you been?! What were you doing & who were you doing it with?", etc. the minute you walk through the door. You can do what you want, when you want. Or not, if you don't feel like it. There's no one to get on your case about it. That's the advantage I enjoy the most!
There's no guarantee (it largely depends on where you live & what kind of neighbors you have) but another advantage is that it's often quieter. If your ex-wife is a chatterbox, you don't have to put up with that anymore. If your ex-husband liked to talk about whatever football team he was a fan of & you're not interested in that, you'll never have to hear about it again. This is especially true if your ex watches TV while you don't.

[not going down the religious rabbit hole]
God made us social beings. [I also think he has dry homour like me]
Ok checked that Box ... moving on.
I am a INTJ 'Turbulent Architect' [a kind of Myers-Briggs Extended Version]
What does that mean?
Introvert, we introverts recharge our batteries with alone time.
19 Year relationship, and have almost zero personal time. I am lucky if I get an hour or two in a week.
Introvert / Analytical - I look for and take comfort in logic. I do not understand emotion but my life experiences has helped a little.
I am not a very good social person. Have issues with Social Queues and 'Seeing the Obvious'
Benefits:
Number one (to me)
Being Older (which I love) means, I know what I know.
As Auntie Mame Dennis says "Life's a banquet, and those poor *** are starving to death." Or something like that ;)
We can pick and choose [with the skill and the wisdom that comes with age] what is being served on our Table of Life.
We are grateful for the past feasts that we might have indulged in, for they have molded and shaped us into the person we are today.
By no means perfect, but by all means, I am me and You are you. You bring different things to the Table of Life. As a Single Person, you get to learn\define\articulate\expand while sampling the Tapis
Now with the whole idea of embracing and developing routines. Taking time in self development...
I am by no means an example or role-model but will share.
My Mother taught and raised me to never 'require' anyone for anything.
The Logical and Rational of being single is that you define You. without having some external being defining and controlling or dictating.
You can chose to sit at home and watch CSI: Vegas tonight.
Or pick up the Cell and text <fill blank> for a Afternoon Glass of Sherry with a side of conversation.
Didn't like the conversation? Don't text <fill blank> Don't have any and just listen. Your not living with that person nor you 'require' them.
Comedy side?
You get to hog the whole bed. If you roll over, you don't steal the covers.
You get to pass as much gas as you wish without Judgment!
You get to turn the heat up or turn it down. Some don't like it hot.
You get to choose to get dressed or run around in the buff.
You get to wear underwear with a hole in it.
You get a single meal with a single price (Not spending as much).
@Barltik2065
Thanks for your reply!
You mentioned many good points.
I am INFJ, so the introvert part of me is fine with being alone and the judmental part of me is perfectly content not to feel judged. And yes, I can wear all my worn out underwear without fear 😂
@GoingInCircles365In the Extended version of the Myers-Briggs there is:
INJA-A or INFJ-T
Referred to as Advocates, the rarest personality type of All.
An introvert whom wants to change the world and leave their mark on it.
Reminds me of the later 50's Edsel or maybe the 1980's Harley Davidson. with the perpetual oil leak also.
I do have to say, the 1959 Edsel Corsair is a nice looking classic.
I have to say I never understood the whole issue of an undergarment whom has a whole it is is bad?
If the undershirt arm pit has a hole, who will see it?
If the under brief is misshapen, who would or could tell? IF the other happens to see it... they should feel honored LOL.
And beyond that, who would really care?
When we go out of the house, as long as I and my spouse are dressed correctly, the rest is a bonus.
Much of what I have\hard written was\is in a British (Brittish?) style humour.
Take with two or more grains of salt please LOL.
Now back to you, Hmmm
Integrity, Conscientious to the Core.
Troubled by injustice, Altruistic, hmmm
"This emotional honesty and insight can make a powerful impression on the people around them."
WOW, we talking hero qualities here.
"... value deep, authentic relationships with others." which makes sense on your previous statement "... but I also feel I desperately want a life partner of some sort."
The dangerous portion of a INFJ can be summed up with:
"When Advocates encounter inequity or unfairness, they rarely give up .... Advocates are hardwired to right the wrongs of the world..."
WOW, Would be fun to have a beer (or Wine) with some Tapis and talk.
Most intriguing personality
@Barltik2065
Great post, thanks for that. Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head. I am a quiet keeps-to-myself person who somehow also wants to make my mark on the world. I definitely value deep, authentic relationships with others, and it's true, I rarely give up.
That reminds me of something I now find funny. My ex-husband once said (about himself): "I'm a firm believer in quitting" and I'm thinking I never quit until the job is done to my satisfaction. 😄
And other than the fact that I don't drink alcohol (no other reason than I just never liked the stuff) - there are probably lots of people here that would be fun to talk to in real life.
Hi @GoingInCircles365 - thats a great question / prompt!
There are soo many benefits to being single. But the most important is probably that it gives you the time and space to focus on discovering who you are. There is no greater journey in life than discovering who you are.
What motivates/demotivates you? Where do you get your energy from? What new skills/hobbies do you enjoy learning? Whats your favourite morning/evening routine? Whats your perfect day off?
@GreenWoods
Thanks for your reply!
I think you bring up an excellent benefit that I'm very much looking forward to, and that's spending lots of quality time defining myself and doing things for myself. I've been asking myself a lot lately, "okay, what do I want to be when I grow up now?" (the answer is different than when I was a kid!)

Dilemnia is natural to happen. Being with someone for years unknowingly we get into habit of someone around.
Good part is you did not spend whole life with false hope one day thing will fine.
Proud of you to take courageous steps. It not easy to cut tie.
Benefit .. there would be thing you would have hope to do ..is time to make list n starting making tick over it.
Like adventurous ..road trip..or cooking class or learning dance form n many more..
Like other said you can go anywhere ,do anything what prior plan and can eat whatever you want.
Do you think now you are more clear and sorted about what type of person you want in life?
@blindHeart12
Thanks for your reply.
It's quite true that without a significant other in my life, I have more time to do things just because I want to do those things, not worrying about the partner.
I think I am very clear about the sort of person I would like to share my life with. I think part of me thinks there isn't such a person out there, which leads to a sense of "settling" for someone who seems to be close enough. I have no illusions of perfection, or a perfect partner, and I always expect there will be compromises. But I do expect some basic courtesies from anyone close to me in my life: honesty, open communication, trust, respect, etc.
@GoingInCircles365
Definitely basic thing we need else no reason to have a relationship. I agree it not easy this days to get someone who is ready to invest time and stick long.
I feel you are mature and positive person. You surely deserve someone and hope you get someone in your journey.
Meantime what you will do have you thought on it ?
@blindHeart12
You asked what will I do, and have I thought about it. Yes, I think about it basically all the time. I have two kids who are older teens, so I look forward to spending lots of time with them (when they want me around, LOL). I have a few friends in town and look forward to spending time with them. I have work, and that can keep me busy. I am an intermediate player of the mandolin, and look forward to spending quality time with music.
These are all things I can do with or without a relationship, but if I'm not thinking about relationship troubles, it's a lot easier to focus on all the good stuff in my life. When I do have relationship troubles, I find myself getting very distracted and derailed from simply being "present" in the moment.
When I write all that, it sounds easy, like I've got this all under control. Someday. Haha. For now, I'm still pretty distracted. Trying to get myself back to a central balanced mood will take a little more time.
I don’t know if this applies to you, but I’m looking forward to not having anybody call me multiple times while at the grocery store asking what to get when I gave him a list. 😂😂😂
@loveandsage24
Hahaha i like your answer.
@GoingInCircles365 More time to focus on you. One less person to worry about. No arguments about where you want to eat, etc. I mean, come on, nobody is there to argue about whether it's too hot or too cold. Get a pet. Have a snack. Give your pet a snack.
