Everyday Acceptance

Hello everyone, you are all invited to join me to discuss about acceptance!

Everyday Acceptance

There are many experiences and activities in our lives which arent innately negative, and which could easily be neutralized – or even made pleasant – by the alchemical power of acceptance. Think of household chores, for example. Are they innately boring activities, or is your antipathy towards them due to a ‘resistant mental attitude? Think about how you feel when youre stuck in a long queue of cars at the traffic lights. What is the source of your frustration? Youre just sitting in the front seat of your car; you could be listening to some pleasant music or staring curiously at the other people in their cars, or at the streets, buildings or the sky. Its only your mental resistance to the situation – your impatience and eagerness to reach your destination – which makes it unpleasant. Our lives are full of neutral situations which are made pleasant or unpleasant by our mental attitude and our thoughts.

I try to approach any daily difficult moments with the question "What can I do about it?" If I can do something about it then I do. If I cant do anything about it then it is relegated to the background for later (or never)

I generally cant change the traffic flow so frustration is a waste here.

What can I do about daily housework chores. Three choices do it now, do it later or dont ever do it.

Somehow the last option rarely gets enacted as it will end up impacting on my enjoyment of my surrounds. So I negotiate internally and assess the best option for me at the time. Sometimes do it now option gives me the pleasure of completing a task and having a clean home.

@oel

Hello Oel!

Well, coping mechanisms and solutions are personal, glad if some reflections can be of help. But also that is not for everyone to benefit. Important is that someone does what sounds to be right for oneself.

Happy coming Christmas time to you!

enlightenedWhat are your daily difficult moments? I reallly don't have many. The only one I can think of is the drive to work and back.35 miles, takes me an hour to get to work and an hour and a half to get home.

enlightenedWhat could you do to improve your emotional approach to them? What I do is listen to good music. Currently Christmas carols.

@Offmytrack ... I stopped to think in order to answer your question and then, from a purely Positive Psychology point of view, asked myself, "Why am i making an effort to think of what's difficult in my day -- and which to censor (to save myself some embarrassment) when it occured to me to enlightened ask: What are the easy and fulfilling parts of my day? So, in that spirit: ... it's easy, even fulfilling to do genealogy work; it's easy and fulfilling to write; it's nice to hear from my daughter sometimes (when I'm not preferring to wallow in worry); ok...it's easy to worry. Right now that's about it. Other things are less easy these days.

@Offmytrack, I beg your pardon. I suffered a newbie error (just joined tonight) and posted directly to you as if these were Your questions. I needed to post directly or to @beyondtheinvisible. My apologies, Azure

I work in a very high stress environment in several of my jobs and it is very fast pace with almost no room for errors. So, it tend to cause me to stress sometimes, but I am learning to slow it down some in my thought process. After all you can only do one thing at a time when it comes to serving people.

@Favor2020 ... personally the fact that you have "several jobs" sounds stressful in and of itself.

@BeyondTheInvisible I agree with you regarding acceptance and ‘resistant mental attitude? . This happens especially when i am tired and i have already lined up some other plans. So the present situation i am stuck in becomes a a burden , a hinderance and the irritationn and resistant builds up. I have noticed these chain of thoughts and am aware of it. Like you said , music indeed calms you down. It helps me a lot , plus i take coffee breaks in between n i also try to meditate daily. It helps to reflect and look at my thought pattern and reaction to it.

@faithlove1111 ... I noticed your choice of metaphor and wording. In your post, you refer to "chain of thought" when most people say, "train of thought". That was a spectacular choice of metaphor on your part because our thoughts can indeed become chains that bind us, and how strong those chains can be. It's very visual and uncomfortable.

@azureBalloon6704 , well said . A chain gets it shape and strength as each rings interlocks firmly , one after another just like our thoughts which comes one after another, which somehow, connects to each other and keeps us stuck in the same spot or situation . I guess I am not wrong to say , some of us have been stuck for years for this chain has kept us prisoners. All we have to do is just to break one ring and the whole chain crumbles. A shift or change of one thought, just one break , can cause a chain reaction , hopefully to change our mindset into looking at things/ problems / situations and people including oneself , diffrently.
