Increasing our happiness as we get older

Increasing our happiness as we get older is done by maintaining close relationships with family and friends, showing gratitude towards others, and maintaining physical and mental well-being as we age. Adults who are older experience higher happiness by keeping a positive attitude and letting go of the stress they may have.

Some of our happiness is a result of our brain aging. We begin to focus more on being happy than being depressed, anxious, and not caring for ourselves or others around us. When we are happy, we can be more mindful of the things going on around us.

5 ways to increase your happiness as you grow older:

Stay connected with loved ones and friends: Keep in contact daily with those we care for and show gratitude for them being in your life. This supports our emotional part of life, reduces anxiety, and raises our sense of well-being.

Being physically active: We want to keep our bodies physically active, so we do this by swimming, walking our neighborhood or parks, going to the gym, and planting in our garden. When we do daily physical work, we release endorphins, "feel-good" hormones.

Pursue a learning experience: Join a community club event where you may meet others, like a book club, arts and crafts, or just doing a hobby you enjoy.

Practicing mindfulness and gratitude: These enhance your happiness, and by practicing them, you stay in the present form of your life. Gratitude helps you focus on the positive things and people in your life.

Giving back to others: This makes not only you happy but also the other people we encounter in our daily lives. A nice gesture or positive affirmation can go a long way.
