Meeting the Social Needs of Older Adults
Hello everyone,
let's talk for a moment about social needs of older adults. We all know that when social needs are not satisfied, this can lead to mental and physical health problems. Even the most extreme introverts need to connect with others occasionally. Maintaining social connections or making new ones may seem more daunting the older you get. It is crucial for the well-being of older people though that they have the opportunity to get involved in social activities like volunteer work or community events.
Do you feel that the social needs of older adults are addressed to in a sufficient way?
What would you like to be given more attention to?
What do you appreciate that has been done for older adults in the last time?

I am unaware of any services for seniors except for meal delivery. I think to know what they have you must seek it out.

Hi, I think this is such a good question and I wish governments would take it into consideration that the healthier the elder population is the healthier the society is as well. In my community, I'm lucky because it was planned as a community with loads of recreational opportunities, including tennis, swimming, pickle ball, loads of classes such as yoga and art and pottery, along with how to plan and write a will and other important classes for informational purposes, and a community center where they invite speakers and there are music and dance performances for a very reasonable price. I think most of the offerings are subsidized by the taxes paid by every resident. For me, tennis, swimming and walking trails are all within walking distance. Also there is a grocery store within a mile, walking or biking distance. I'm not saying it's nirvana but it's pretty nice.

It sounds like an amazing place to live in and a example to follow for other communities. I wish all communities could afford such a place!

Do you feel that the social needs of older adults are addressed in a sufficient way? Yes, they are addressed in a sufficient way but a lot of us don't have access to them still. Some of us older people do not drive and have no transportation to get to where they offer this service or the cost to join is more than allowed in their budget. Public Transportation in my state is almost nonexistent. We also live in a role area and neighbors are a hand wave if that.
What would you like to be given more attention to? The food that they fix and deliver to the elderly. It is awful and a lot is wasted because of the preparation, and what they put on their plates. If the food is nasty then the clients are throwing it away, what good is that of Government money? Make something that they themselves. would eat. Fix the Program
What do you appreciate that has been done for older adults in the last time? The Medicare Wellness Program was a good start. Check up every 3 months. If the doctors will do thorough exams and really listen to the patient's complaints.

Transportation is often a big issue for the elderly. Sorry that you're not having a functioning public transport system - that makes it a lot harder. Good to have someone around to drive you!
Good healthy And tasty food is important to keep everyone happy. There were even campaigns run by famous people in recent years to increase the quality of food available to elderly but I guess the rising food prices also have an impact on what can be provided at present.
