Smell and Memory
Smell and memory
Research has shown that smells have the ability to trigger memories — known as "the Proust effect".
The Proust effect refers to the vivid reliving of events from the past through sensory stimuli. Many of us are familiar with those special moments, when you are taken by surprise by a tiny sensory stimulus (e.g. the scent of your grandmas cookies) that evokes an intense and emotional memory of an episode from your childhood.
The research was carried out to understand what sense memories do to people and how they contribute to well-being in later life.
What kind of smells bring up positive memories in you?
Do you feel comfortable in sharing a few words about your memories?
How do feel when remembering them?

I remember the smell of bread rising in a bowl on the radiator in our kitchen. It had to rise multiple times, and I just loved the aroma. One of the few times I remember my mom being happy.
@Zengrl we had bread rising in a closet that was next to the chimney. Delightful smell and baking in oven and coming out of oven.
@Zengrl
Wonderful memories Zengrl, your mom happy and the bread rising until it's take to bake it, the smell of fresh bread filling the room. mmmh. Fresh bread with a little butter, what's your favorite with fresh bread?
@amiablePeace77 this is very true for me.
I smell things baking and it reminds me of my childhood times. I smell fish chowder and it reminds me of my dad cooking up some "chowda"
@soulsings
Soul, you just made me smile - fish chowder reminds me of a very nice visit in Maine, Maine seems to be kind of famous for their lobster chowder. Thanks for that trigger
@amiablePeace77 yes Maine has some good chowder for sure. Nice memories.
When I smell the ocean air I am reminded of the beach where I grew up or vacations to Hawaii 😌
@sincereHemlock2665
Hemlock, you grew up on Hawai? Wow! I have never been there but saw lots of videos - awesome! What did you like most about the island?
@amiablePeace77
Ha ha - no, I took vacations there. Its a beautiful island and the people have a nice mellow spirit, very kind. If you can go I recommend it.
. I love my almond butter on bread.
