Can't do anything in my life without adrenaline

Hello ma dudes,

So I had this problem for a long time & I can't figure out how to deal with it :/ I asked a bunch of ppl on reddit and they think im a procrastinator. I CANT finish any task without adrenaline, I can't wake up before my 12 hrs of sleep as an adult without adrenaline!! I need a class, a deadline, my siblings playing an exciting video game to wake up or finish an assignment (basically stress or excitement) this happens with other activities, I hate peaceful things like meditation, yoga and will usually go for smth more chaotic like cardio, extreme sports, tall rollercoasters, etc. Even if i don't procrastinate and do it early I still can't finish half the assignment before the due date. and no, this isnt perfectionism, fear, or anxiety. It's just my brain power is not activated, thus making me slow? It's hard to make people understand.

When doing something exciting i can't resist the urge to stop doing it which usually leads to sleeping late without realizing it. Without adrenaline, I focus so hard that I forget my progress! My brain relies too much on adrenaline. I envy my siblings who can wake up and finish things without it.

Usually I'm a very fun person and I'm not good for study or work :( I'm just not wired for that. I hate this so much!!!! should this be a concern? How can I wake up and finish assignments without the pressure or excitement of adrenaline?

Thanks!

@excitableSun85

I tried classic study habits like breaking things down, pomodoro technique, creating artificial deadlines, I hate those they don't work

On days when you dont have the stress , keep your electronic gadgets aside before an hour and go to sleep after an hour after , deciding about the time you want to grt up on.

@excitableSun85 I removed the last part of your title. Titles have stricter guidelines regarding things like cursing or triggering words.

The title seems to get the same information across the latter portion, but if you want me to edit the title again, let me know what you want it to be within the guidelines.

Hey, I don't know if this will help and its not the ultimate solution but I found that when I cut sugar from my diet, I eventually lost that constant need for stimulation. Now I have steady energy and staying power, rather than those bursts of energy and shorter attention span

Psychologically, thinking of building is a steady way will give better results than approaching everything with high energy only to burnout quickly

I appreciate any advice because I ran out of options and when i look up stuff in google I find “adrenaline rush or adrenal gland diseases i dont relate to, along with procrastination and tips of studying that don't work” im just mainly looking for how to create a sense of urgency but for some reason ppl dont include “excitement” along w it, even tho they can have the same effect, i wish i can get tips for how to create both of them to balance the positives and negatives and avoid getting stressed. One of my listeners said to substitute adrenaline with caffeine. I’ll try to cut down sugar gradually. Tysm!!

@excitableSun85 This sounds potentially like ADHD. Or, at least, this is a common issue for people with ADHD, so possibly looking into how they deal with it could help you out. I'm not an expert, I just have a lot of neurodivergent friends who have said similar things

I also have neurodivergent friends each with varying symptoms, one of my friends who has ADHD is late on his homework I asked if he studies better on adrenaline he said he used to do that until he became de sensitized, I get it, bc i get de sensitized when my homework is too long and impossible to finish when due. his main issue is distraction. I made a reward/punishment study group with him, and its working great! I kept him from getting distracted and I kept trying to get my adrenaline fix, only problem is that he’s not always around and My adrenaline levels werent as high as I expected even tho i was faster on work, Idk how to amp it up 😳

I have watched “how to ADHD” on youtube and her videos on stimulation, boredom, and needing motivation is SPOT on for me, I always had trouble in grade school bc I wish the books were video games… Some of the general advice is working but i have to figure out how to make it scarier to get adrenaline. I have passed grade school with A’s by stressful all nighters I dont wanna repeat it in college lol.

Thnx!

I also think it it could be ADHD. And I have just identified myself with it, and starting to learn more about that. I am enjoying a site called add.org, lots of scientific resources.

Im tryna avoid writing a long post lol, but I wrote more abt it in the comment above. some folks on quora told me that i could have it too, but idk like I had trouble focusing in grade school but now i can focus just fine on long lectures even tho its tiring bc the teacher’s potential of yelling gives me adrenaline. I am a lil bit distracted on homework and tend to take long breaks. I feel like im not distracted or forgetful enough for it to count as ADHD. my main issue is w adrenaline and lack of clear thinking. But how do you solve this issue? Do you manufacture adrenaline or find a way to work fast without it? Thnx

Could be true… Im just scared that if i dont have it or anything else it may sound like im making excuses to my psychiatrist. i know most people have this problem but idk if oversleeping bc of it is also common? Thnx! I’ll bring it up with my psychiatrist.

@excitableSun85 What you describe sounds like Executive Functions challenges. https://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/executive-function
Executive functions problems can be caused by ADHD, depression, anxiety, learning disabilities, brain injuries, etc.

TW: depression

true for me, I have depression but before it I still had issues with school. The depression seems to desensitize me from adrenaline and removing interest from topics I like making it harder to focus. I need to amp it up somehow. Other ppl suggested adrenaline addiction and a habit i picked from school. Others misunderstood it for fear or procrastination. Its hard to figure out so i can tell my psychiatrist what it is exactly. But thnx this will help narrow it down.

@excitableSun85 When I read your initial post, I interpreted 'adrenaline' as 'drive'. There's no way to know for sure what chemical substance or hormone triggers that state. Sounds like you lack the ability to initiate actions without some external pressure. I doubt that if injected with adrenaline, you will feel in control and ready to finish assignments.
So it's more important to understand how you feel without 'adrenaline'. How do you feel when trying to meditate? Do you feel sleepy? Do you have intrusive thoughts?

Yea its hard to figure out what the issue is, its more like the pressure or excitement itself primarily than adrenaline. When I meditate or do quiet tasks however I feel sleepy or an extreme urge to move around, talk or do something, it’s not anxiety It’s prolly just me looking for the next exciting thing or seeking stimulation, I tried dopamine detox Like avoided most of social media and video games it helped me focus more but the urge is still there, just not to socials or games as much, but just wanting to do something physical or fun like crafting or talking abt exciting things I sometimes scream or shake bc im excited abt smth like being in the amusement park or talking abt creative ideas or the next scientific inventions, This is why my siblings complain that im too hyper, but i cant help it.

@excitableSun85 "I feel sleepy or an extreme urge to move around, talk or do something" Does it mean that you have two modes: depression/low activity and excitement/restlessness? Is there any pattern, maybe? For how long are you in each mode?

Not really, it’s more like triggers, I function ok before depression and only get angry/sad when a thing like someone yelling at me triggers it, Also there are days when i’m tired but i’m almost always restless staying up until 4am to do something interesting or revenge bedtime procrastination. Also when something exciting triggers me I function on the next level, and start brainstorming ideas non stop that can stop me from sleeping, and hyperfocus on an activity for hours at a time not realizing or ignoring that i have to eat/sleep/go to the bathroom. this happens when im at the amusement park or when i play as well, it’s nightime everyone is tired but i still want to play !!! lol

Also my anger mode is quite long it only stops when we settled the conflict, my excitement mode stops when i get too tired

Thnx! Adrenaline is typically the hormone u get when excited or stressed not an expert tho, and I tend to do too much for too long and not get anything done either, but that’s because i don’t have the adrenaline inducing pressure/excitement i get from deadlines and hobbies if that makes sense, also i dont take ADD meds bc im not diagnosed w it.
