August 15 day three: Coping to and through recovery

Why do we use coping skills?

There are many causes that can lead a person into drug and alcohol use – stressful situations, external pressures, difficult emotions, and trauma are just a few. When a person does not know how to cope with these feelings or situations in a healthy way, he or she may use drugs to feel some relief or to escape. Hence the phrase, “drowning our sorrows” – or, taking to the bottle when things get tough.

In order to cope with drug addiction, a person needs to first understand the root of their problem – which emotions, which situations, which traumas drive him or her towards drinking and drugs? Then, he or she must relearn how to handle these stressors without the once-known blanket of drugs and alcohol. Those in recovery must develop healthy coping skills to prevent substance use and relapse.

We have this thing we call a tool box where we keep all our relevant tools/coping skills in this (recovery) tool box.

A few tools you could place in is:

1)healthful hobbies

2)exercise

3)balanced diet

4)a sober support network

5)meditation and mindfulness

@internalacceptance quotes “Something that I've always followed in my Recovery is take what works, leave what doesn't”

What she means by this is if you discover a bunch of tools or coping skills that are given, take what works for you, including resources,guidance,and/or suggestions.

important notes:

-One does not have to be abstaining in order to be working towards recovery

-One person’s way or recovering may not suit another, there are many pathways to recovery

Discussion Question:

1)List some tools of your own that you use from your tool box or that you can create a tool box with relevent for building recovery.

2)How do you currently feel about recovering/continueing your recovery?

3)what do you feel would strengthen your recovery?

@magicalOcean594

1)List some tools of your own that you use from your tool box or that you can create a tool box with relevent for building recovery.

praying, journaling, meditating, communicating through social media in a healthy way, mindfulness, meetings, positive things.

2)How do you currently feel about recovering/continueing your recovery?

i'm tapering off the pills i am addicted to (prescribed) and i feel exhausted but i know i have to keep a good attitude <3 what happens to us is 10% our attitude is 90% what matters, I LOVE THAT QUOTE. i want to be strong and do great things with my life instead of "drowning in my sorrows" I've had enough of that tbh. We do recover!!

3)what do you feel would strengthen your recovery?

having a sponsor and working a program daily ☺️
