Boyfriend addicted to weed

Hi all. My boyfriend of three years has been smoking weed around 3-4 times a night for the past 5 years. He is now trying to quit and its been really hard on both of us. From suicide thoughts, to anger, to just overall sadness, he has felt it all. It is getting really hard to know whether or not my feelings are valid. He is going through so much. He recently relapsed a couple times and i was upset about it because i thought he was doing so well. Now its hard because he barely eats and gets in these sad moods where everything around him is boring and nothing can make him feel happy. Does anyone have experience with this? I just need support at this time cuz idk how to act around him anymore.

He's used to getting his dopamine supply through pot and now it's cut off. His brain needs time to find a way to produce normal levels of it on its own now. So yeah everything seems depressing and pointless, but you have to encourage him with positive reinforcement. Encourage him to go on a run or do something that gets his mind off things. Maybe give him a reward if he needs it. Getting angry at him for relapsing is understandable, but it only makes him feel worse about himself which will make him want to smoke again. There's only so much you can do to encourage him to change, but you can't force it. This will be a difficult time for you guys, but hopefully it brings you closer at the end of it.

Best wishes, Cain

hi Cain,

thank you for your replies! It means a lot. He also has friends who smoke and im sure that makes it even harder. Right now when hes in his moods he barely talks to me. I try to encourage him but theres not much i can say to help him. Do you have any more advice about this subject? I want to learn as much as i can about how to love someone through this.

Hi,

I used to smoke a lot of weed and have had a few girlfriends who tell me I picked the weed over them. After reflecting, I realized they were right in a sense. It’s not just about the weed but the lifestyle associated with it that made him happy. The music, the friends in it, the activities, the fashion, the list goes on. So it’s not just about the weed.

when I got sober for a month, it’s honestly safe to say I did have a slight withdrawal and was moody. After a lot of exercise, nutrition, cranberry juice and reflection….I was thinking clearly and I became myself again.

I give you a lot of props and respect for trying to help him through this. He won’t forget that, just encourage good habits and make life fun for both of you by suggesting fun stuff. Somethings will click and some won’t but the memory bank for happy sober shit starts to pile up and that’ll be the new lifestyle he’ll start to see as his new reality.

hope this helps, God bless!

Cain has already given you some great advice on how to help your boyfriend but I hope you realize that your feelings are valid. I hope that you're finding ways to take care of yourself so you're cautious not to allow his moods to affect yours. I think it's great that you're sticking by him in this but you can't forget about yourself too. Let me know if you need to talk.
