Alcohol

My boyfriend is an alcoholic and I’m struggling to understand the addiction aspect of it & don’t know how to bring it up. We have been together just over a year and I have known since the beginning. He has admitted it to me I would say 2-3 times, but we never had a conversation about it. The other night I brought it up to him, how he drinks a lot and I think about my future with him and it scares me because I know people who have died from alcohol addiction. He got defensive and would say “drinking is what they died from nothing else” as if drinking wasn’t the reason, he told me anything could kill him and that alcohol won’t be the reason… this morning I woke up around 7:30am and saw him taking a shot of whiskey… he told me he doesn’t need alcohol, but I do not believe him. I’m trying to understand that an addiction is difficult to just stop and that he truly has to want to stop, but I have never dealt with this in my life.

First of all, sorry you are going thru this. evaluate this completely before you take it on this affects you too.

It does not change until they face it and want to change.  I was stupid and too patient before my partner had to change driving issues forced AA etc still he was not facing it ............finally kicked it but .... the damage is done... friends and family lost because who they were when they drank.... health issues early onset memory issues and who knows what other fun left over we will find ...

You cannot TALK them into wanting to help themselves...  they will ignore all the stories of what has happened to others they think it will NOT happen to them.  Thinking of driving I did not worry if they killed themselves but the innocents they most likely would kill or hurt .....money we wasted on drinking and all the trouble it caused could have funded a retirement........ TIME is the thing we do not get more of... We do NOT get a re-do or do- over.
