Addiction is an increasing issue throughout the world. From video games and sex to drugs and alcohol, addiction has consumed most parts of many of our lives. Part of recovery is sharing our stories and experiences as it helps facilitate self-evaluation and visualize our progress in our recovery journeys. It also helps others who are not yet in recovery understand they are not alone in their journey as well as give them an idea on how to start their recovery.

@CognitiveACE Thank you for posting this awesome thread! :)

1. What is your addiction?

I definitely have a caffeine addiction, especially with coffee.

2. Where are you now in your recovery?

This is tough for me to answer honestly! Well, I do my best to moderate my caffeine intake. These past two weeks, I have attempted to only have coffee 3 times a week instead of 5 times. I still drink tea daily though.

3. What was your “rock bottom”?

When I was in senior year in college, I had coffee almost daily in addition to my daily tea. Sometimes, I would have 2-3 caffeinated drinks.

1. What is your addiction?

Alcohol, drugs, binge eating, tearing my flesh, tapping things and used to be smoking cigarettes

2. Where are you now in your recovery?

I am at different places in each addiction. In drugs, I am recovered. In alcohol, I am tightly controlled and consume very little. In binge eating, I recently had a relapse, but before that had shown myself incredible control for over a year.In tearing my flesh, I seem to have distracted myself. It happened unexpectedly so I can’t take credit for it.In tapping things, I seem to have recently relapsed.I suddenly stopped tearing my flesh and started tapping things again.

3. What was your “rock bottom”?

I never had a rock bottom in any addiction except smoking cigarettes.I suffered and tried and tried to quit all of them, then finally slowly moved away from the habit. But in cigarette smoking I was in a crash caused by me ashing my cigarette in the car while driving.I looked away for 2 seconds, looked up and slammed into the back of a van.I totalled my car and it did something to me as far as a desire to smoke.I suddenly had a stronger desire to stop smoking so I did within a week. I haven't had a cigarette in 12 years.

I'm glad to hear that you only totalled your car and didn't get seriously injured! I too have had situation like that back in 2019 except it was related to falling asleep after a whole night of partying. It was not my first rock bottom but it had the biggest impact on me and made me change my ways in reference to partying and drinking.

Thank you for sharing. We appreciate your openness!

My struggle has been going on for awhile. I have been on 2 medications and they my brain go crazy and happy which I've been trying to stay clean. I also struggle with over the counter pain medication such as iBuprofen and Tylenol as well. Back when I was in high school my principal and I, we'd have a discussion about getting clean. But with the medications I have been on, they mixed to the point it looked like I was on crack and it wasn't good. I'm trying to get physically and mentally clean and stay that way too. Its become hard because I want to take a Tylenol to just feel better or an iBuprofen so I can focus but I want to get clean so bad. I'm a college freshman with a Cyber Operations major and I need to graduate college.

It is baffling to see how drugs, even over the counter ones, can be so addictive. Thank you for sharing! I wish you luck on your endeavors and am rooting for you. Keep it up! You'll graduate in no time :)

What is/was your addiction?

Party pills, caffeine, opioids, psychoactives, cigarettes, alcohol.

Where are you now?

Sober except for caffeine and cigarettes.

What was your rock bottom?

Finding out at the end of a 'fun' filled day that one of my close friends overdosed and still not being able to push myself to quit.

After a couple of months, I did.

Thank you for sharing! I have found that many people in recovery for drugs/alcohol resort to nicotine and caffeine for replacements. Recovery is all about replacing the negative addictions with positive ones, do you feel that smoking cigerettes and caffeine are positive alternatives for you? sure they can be hard on your health, but do they help you get over your more negative urges/cravings?

1. What is your addiction? My addiction is to pretty much any mind altering substance there is, there arent many types of drugs I havent done and i've typically drank when I couldnt get any drugs.

2. Where are you now in your recovery? I have been sober since November 1st (2020), my problem the last few years has been staying the course, I can be good and sober for 3 weeks or 3 months but I always end up going back to whatever drug or drink I have the compulsion to do.

3. What was your "rock bottom"? My rock bottom was the 3rd of November (2020) when I came home from work and my wife had taken our children and left, the only things left at the house were mine.

What is your addiction?

you've named it I've done it. But somehow I've always managed to overcome it. This time Around is ejecting cocaine

2. Where are you now in your recovery?

I was clean for nine months and then I had a relapse 2 month ago that some people would call rock-bottom and then I relapsed again a week ago and then a week from then. I've been a week clean today. Hopefully Staying on this side of recovery this time

3. What was your “rock bottom”?

I keep reinventing my rock-bottom. Which is not good I keep thinking I have reached my rock-bottom and that would be done with it and I would be in recovery and I wouldn't go back but then months will go by and Bam I'm right back to a new rock bottom so I cannot really tell you what my rock-bottom is because it's become interchangeable

What is your addiction? Substances and sex addiction

Where are you now in your recovery? For the first time ever I reached out to a saa group. They have a meeting this Sunday, so that's good. (Its kinda surreal, so I haven't felt all the nervous and doubts I'm used to. )

What was your "rock bottom"? Every night, I would feel the urge to either masturbate or hookup with a stranger. Every night, I gave in to those urges. Every night, I would cry and feel worthless. And, Every night, I would take Xanax (sometimes ecstacy). It was a viscous terrible cycle, leaving me in a state of misery.
