Alcoholic+ Parents
I know Im just a teen but I know when enough is enough, I just dont know where to start. Growing up Ive always knew my parents were constantly drinking alcoholic beverages, its almost like they have substituted alcohol for water. In addition to the achoholism, my father has an opioid and other nonprescriped drug problem. These addictions have caused many problems in my home such as spousal abuse, my father walking about the house with a gun threatening to kill my mother and I, and so much more. Next year Im going off to college, which is 4 hours away from home, and I dont know if I can do that without being constantly worried about being away from home and unable to parent sit.
I have already tried may tactics including trying to reason with them to get help, asking my older siblings who are already established for help, hiding and destroyingmy parents substances. I need a way to safely get my parents the help they need. Where can I start?
@adaptableThinker7331 what did your older siblings say when you asked them if they would help and did you ask them for help with them now or in the future when you leave home?
@jennysunrise8 My siblings said they would try but they both havent done anything to help. When I had asked them for help, I asked for help to get them started on a path to better themselves. That was earlier this year. Im considering asking my siblings again so I can have a peace of mind knowing that my parents are being looked after. I just dont know if thats the right approach. I feel so guilty knowing that Ive been enabling my parents.
@adaptableThinker7331 first your parents have to want to get on the path to better themselves they have to want to change want to stop drinking and using drugs they have to be interested in getting on the path to better themselves neither of your siblings can put them on that path if they dont want to get on it you could talk to them again about helping out with some things to make your life easier so you dont have to do it all and talk to them about helping with them after you leave home it doesnt sound to me like your enabling them it sounds like youve tried several ways to try and get them to change why do you think of yourself as an enabler?
I’m in the same boat. Only now I’m 24 years old and moved out. I did all of that. I became my parents therapist practically. The short answer is that of something nobody want to hear. And that’s that you can’t help somebody who doesn’t want to be helped. There’s nothing we can do for our parents but break the chain and don’t repeat the cycle..
we grew up with them. So naturally you’re going to always love and want to protect them. Hence me right now.. and the hardest thing I’ll ever have to do is just walk away for my mental health.. for my stress. For my wellbeing all in all.
