@23Gentleman
I can't comment about your specific issue...
but in general...
regarding unwanted habits...
QUICK ANSWER:
IMHO...
change mindsets so...
It seems completely unacceptable to do, period.
Case closed....
Then decide to stop doing it.
Decide if the urge occurs...
Then just acknowledge it...
but name it as just an urge...
that will go away if ignored and...
suitable distraction is done in it's place instead...
because that is actually very true.
LONG ANSWER....
IMHO...
The easiest way to stop a habit might be to...
change mindset completely...
so the habit seems completely unacceptable and...
totally repulsive for some overwhelmingly important reason(s) that...
one decides over-rides all previous motivations one had in the past....
Then... that might create the needed...
self-identity change and...
motivation... and willpower and...
reduce the desire... so...
one can easier... stop the habit because...
there's far far less enticement and...
much much more deep-seated aversion.
In a nutshell...
One might for ANY habit...
Stop seeing the habit as a good idea in any way.
Stop seeing the habit as worth it in any way.
Stop seeing the habit as safe in any way.
Stop seeing the habit as exciting... instead...
Start seeing the habit as plain stupid.
Stop seeing the habit as part of one's identity
(like... It's not me anymore... that was the old me).
Admit it was a mistake to start because it's a trap.
Forgive one's self. Learn from the lesson.
Revert back to one's self before the habit.
One could think of ALL the mindsets one has about the habit...
and change them.
One could think back before having the habit and...
how they were happy and didn't have that problem...
and how the habit is really just a brain-loop problem one is stuck in...
but...
One can get out of the habit...
if one can...
just stop for long enough and...
have alternative coping behaviors and mindsets.
One could create new (mini or tiny) replacement habits.
Mini or tiny habits are so tiny and easy to do that...
they enable a habit to start and then grow over time...
until it is automatic.
Always keep the mini or tiny habit goal so small it can always be done with success. That keeps the habit growing.
Never raise the bar. Raising the bar can kill the habit.
Bonus habit results can happen easier then.
Use the new mini or tiny habit instead when needed.
Eventually the new mini habit will grow so strong it wins.
Mindfulness can help as explained in this book...
The Here-and-Now Habit - How Mindfulness Can Help You Break Unhealthy Habits Once and for All
By Hugh G. Byrne 2016
https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Here_and_Now_Habit/aVyfCwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0
The book has some great supplementary audio files for download...
that walk a person through the questions they can ask themselves to change their mindset and deal with the habit as it is being eliminated.
The book doesn't try to convince one...
but rather lets one be kind to one's self and compassionate and...
figure out what is going on and why.
One can explore their thoughts and feelings about staying these and also readiness to change.
That approach can make changing behavior easier because...
it can prevent one from putting up complete mental resistance to change just to maintain autonomy.
It's somewhat like a Motivational Interviewing approach to helping change.
Other habit books explain how to change the personal environment situations to make a habit more difficult so easier to resist (books like "Tiny Habits" or "Atomic Habits").
Please forgive any typos above.
This is a first draft. Next person that has similar problems will get an improved version.
@23Gentleman
By the way...
many "bad" habits start as... solutions to other problems...
meaning... they solved a problem so felt like good habits at first...
but they ended up being the wrong solution because...
they tap into brain loops that are...
problematic and create more of a...
way bigger new problem...
than they are a solution for the original problem.
So it's best to look back at the original problem(s)...
that caused one to start the bad habit as a solution.
Bad habits are often done due to our...
inability to manage our emotional lives.
Fix those problems properly and...
the bad habit isn't needed or wanted.
