ADD/ADHD Iceberg
ADD/ADHD Iceberg
Those with ADD or ADHD are often known as being impulsive, hyperactive, and/or inattentive. People can observe these symptoms, the acting before thinking, always moving, maybe bouncing our legs or jumping around, and daydreaming or not being focused on what we should.
But there are so many other symptoms than what is visible. A person with ADD or ADHD may be hiding some of the above symptoms. Someone with hyperactivity may have racing thoughts or slight movements that others may not notice. They may be quick to make a decision or give an answer, and they may be really forgetful because their thought process is so quick. This can make it really difficult for a diagnosis to be made when others cant see the symptoms, but it is real!!
Not everything is related to symptoms in the classroom either. It may be harder for a student to pay attention in class or to get assignments done on time, but it can also be paying attention to what your supervisor might try to tell you at work, or getting everyday tasks or chores completed.

1) What symptoms do you face that others may not be able to see?
2) How do you experience symptoms of ADD/ADHD? Ex. racing thoughts as hyperactivity etc.
3) What do you wish others knew about ADD or ADHD?

1) What symptoms do you face that others may not be able to see?
Urges to do things other than my responsibilities(wanting to paint when im writing an essay, for example), the feeling that theres straight caffeine running through my veins, tiredness after an episode
2) How do you experience symptoms of ADD/ADHD? Ex. racing thoughts as hyperactivity etc.
I feel hyper sometimes. I have a really hard time focusing on responsibilities and remembering do do things.
3) What do you wish others knew about ADD or ADHD?
I wish people understood how much it stings to hear things like "lol add much???" or "not to be adhd, but..."
a golden example of this was this one pewdiepie video where he was talking about how annoying jake paul is and he said something that implied jake paul's immature behavior is associated with adhd. i'll add the link when i get home later today. if i dont, plz pm me about it as i probably forgot <3

The comparrision of an iceberg is a great one for those dealing with ADD/ADHD. It can really help to inform those who don't know a lot about ADD/ADHD learn a bit more of what they don't see (what is under the surface).
Love the post <3
Love this. This is one of those things I really feel the vast majority of people aren't aware of when they hear "ADD" or "ADHD".
1) What symptoms do you face that others may not be able to see?
Definitely my time blindness and emotional disregulation. I feel like I can come off as selfish and dramatic when I actually have a poor concept of time and suck at giving time estimates. I also just FEEL things more intensely than the average person. An itchy tag in my shirt is UNBEARABLE.
2) How do you experience symptoms of ADD/ADHD? Ex. racing thoughts as hyperactivity etc.
This is a great question because just from researching, reading people's experiences, and talking to people, I'm really struck with the fact that ADHD is sort of an "operating system". Everyone's bringing in their own individual genes, character traits, temperaments, etc. Everyone's Mac has different files and programs and uses it in different ways, but at the end of the day, we can all agree we different from a PC running windows.
Personally, I experience constant "freezing" of speech. My thoughts will race, race, race as I talk and my mind will be 4 thoughts ahead of my mouth so I have to continuously pause and regather my thoughts. I forget vocabulary or sentences will come out mildly out of order...(is speech dyslexia a thing?) This happens more often when under stress or if I feel like the person I'm speaking to is "sizing me up". This might sound like it happens to anyone who gets a little nervous, but for me, it's not just a little embarrassing. It's downright distressing and at times makes me want to cry because I feel like I sound inarticulate.
3) What do you wish others knew about ADD or ADHD?
I wish others knew about the rest of the iceberg and that we're not selfish or bad people. We find some seemingly simple things very difficult. But we make up for it by being brilliant where "normal" minds might struggle.

@GrahZeymahzin Thanks for sharing.
some of these don't apply to me but to people new to adhd and add this could prove really helpful
