Undiagnosed 16f: women with adhd; have you sometimes been labeled as selfish?
Hi. I am a 16 year old girl and I have ADHD. My mom, a psychologist, has said that I have ADHD; we've not gone to another doctor to get an official diagnosis because I do well in school, so she thinks I don't need medication. She's also told me i do have many autistic traits, but I am not autistic.
I've been getting in trouble a lot at home lately. It's caused me to slump into a pretty heavy depression, but that's probably for another forum.
When I get in trouble, it is always because I am selfish, inattentive, careless, and inconsiderate. It's never my intention to be these this, and my friends to not consider me to be this, but they're biased. I've accepted that im generally a bad daughter, and every time I have a streak of good I get in trouble again because of this behavior. part of the behavior is my forgetfulness and impulsivity, which always hurts and inconveniences those around me.
I've sometimes seen online that specifically, women with ADHD, are often labeled as these things, especially when they are younger. I don't want to dismiss my parents and say that I am not all of these things, but if this is true i at least want something that could explain why i am seemingly allergic to being a good daughter. Maybe it will encourage me to get diagnosed once i get out of here and turn 18. Can any diagnosed women say if this is true for them, or am i a victim of mental health ***?
sorry, didnt know social media names were censored on here. i guess the app doesnt matter though, so i guess a rephrasing of what i said is "or am i a victim of mental health social media"
@UssrTeacup you can write names like !n$t@ by censoring them like that...
@UssrTeacup I'm a boy though, but I guess gender doesn't matter most of the time. I am undiagnosed too and my symptoms heavily match with ADHD. Anyways, you're not 'allergic' to being a good daughter. Maybe you should talk to your mom about this all especially cuz she's a psychologist...
@thoughtfulFriend8445 you would think that but apparently it makes a big difference and woman are often underdignosed because they primarily studied mental health issues on men and then had to come back and learn that it acts very different in women
@generousAvocado9643 Ohh!! That's some good knowledge and bias protection. Thanks a lot!!
I Get u SM!
I’ve learnt recently that most of the times when I’m mistaken for being selfish or rude it’s because I didn’t explain my actions.
I’ve done this in arguments with friends where I explain everything with so much detain they ether understand where I’m coming from or get so confused they just drop the whole thing 😭😭. I think as an ADHD person it’s almost easier to tell people every little thaught and reason to what I do because most of the time they can’t understand it. And as long and tedious that sounds it’s helps me build my relationships with others because you can allways guarantee that people will finally know exact what your feeling!
Hope this helps 🙂↕️🥹
@EmJh2207 Telling everything that goes in the head is very exhausting for me...
