Im I’m really struggling at the moment and I’m hoping that someone has found a secret key to surviving in everyday life because I am really struggling. It’s causing conflict with my parents because they don’t understand why I can’t keep stuff clean and I get I genuinely feel unable, but then , I’m fighting with myself because after being told I’m lazy for so long also start a question myself. Anyways I would feel so happy but could someone keep my clothes off my floor and somehow keep my desk somewhat organised and clean so I have a space I can work and I don’t feel disgusting if anyone has any tips I’d be so grateful

You are definitely not lazy.

It's alot to deal with for certain.

And judgement doesn't help.

We all think and do things differently.

It might help you to just start with small, daily, consistent habits, so you don't feel overwhelmed but start to see progress and start to see your room as a place you like to be 🩷🤗

I do micro tasks. I set a timer for something reasonable. Like I start with 15 mins and I go at the task with zero interruptions. I put my phone away far enough to hear but I can’t reach for it. I’m fully focused on the task for that time. Also I have sticky notes which for me helps me since it’s a visual. Again I do micro tasks. That might mean 15 mins each day to do laundry which is my nemesis lol.

You’ll be surprise what you can do in 15 mins.

You’re not lazy or broken your mind is wired differently that’s all. Lots of us walking the same road.

That really sums up the struggle with ADHD. I got/get unstuck by watching "How to ADHD" and "Clutterbug," both YT channels. I also read Atomic Habits, which changed the way I think about goals.

Cleaning my space has always been a struggle for me. My current hack is to have a magnetic dry erase planner with checklists on my fridge and assign a theme for each day using fun colors. Monday is laundry day, Tuesday I declutter, dust and organize a space and gather trash, Wednesday is floor day-- vacuum and mop--, Thursday I clean the kitchen, Friday I clean the bathroom and do one load of laundry, and Saturday is catch-up day.

I came up with this schedule after I established a daily habit of washing dishes twice a day, so I don't need to clutter my schedule with that daily task.

My strategy for trying to keep on top of things changes periodically. In the past I used an app, but that got too complicated for me. Having a simple, set schedule that has a day for catching up on skipped tasks is helping me so far.

Is it possible that you have too much stuff? Too many clothes? Where do you normally store your clothes? What is causing you friction when you need to put clothes away? Could you get a basket to catch your clothes? Do you need a new organizing system that makes your life simpler?

I'm not certain, but I think you have a "butterfly" organizing style. Do you need to see all your stuff and be able to store it quickly without any effort? That's my organizing style. I haven't mastered organizing my space yet, but knowing my organizing style has helped me make my home more functional.

I hope this helps!

hi, I know that the days would help me but I’m a student and most days task for the day studying and I cannot be cleaning on top of that specially because I get home very late and also even if I would have the time it’s too overwhelming to have too big energy taking to in one day and it can make me not complete what I need to do so the thing is I fall behind on everything because I don’t have time really because I get home at six and then I have to study until really late and this is obviously very energy consuming someone days when I don’t have to study I feel like it’s me trying to protect myself in a way like to regain energy and therefore end up not doing stuff allowing myself to rest I guess

I feel this to my core 😩

I was a student with undiagnosed ADHD, and I lived in a nasty old trailer next to my grandparents' house. I could not for the life of me bring myself to clean my tiny room. I would start putting things away, and then I would get distracted by anything with words. Old homework, textbooks, etc. I was supposed to be responsible for keeping the trailer clean, but I was too consumed by school work, and then a job on top of school work, that I couldn't even think about cleaning. The mess and the grossness factor of mold on the walls was overwhelming to the point that I did my best to ignore it. My dishes used to grow stinky bacteria colonies in the sink, too.

What helped me to at least wash my dishes and maybe put some things away was to play high-energy music.

I was very slow at getting school assignments done, especially writing assignments. Is there someone at your school that you can talk to about getting accommodations for your ADHD? This is something I wish I was aware of when I was in school.

One thing I read in Atomic Habits is that if you want to start a habit, you need to practice doing the first step of your desired habit until it becomes automatic. It should take 2 minutes or less. What habit do you want to start with, and what is the first step?

Example: You want to start a habit of washing dishes. The first step is to turn on faucet. You would turn on the faucet at the same time each day that you would wash dishes. Once that becomes automatic, you can start washing a few dishes. Once washing a few dishes regularly feels completely natural, you can wash some more dishes, or start washing a few dishes twice a day, or whatever feels like an easy progression to you.

We don’t have any support at my school overall adhd it’s taken serious anyone can get diagnosed with it if they wanted to, there is a huge misconception that it has to purely to with focus and therefore everyone can relate to it. luckily, I saw it with my mom gives me structure also in my room gets too messy to clean it, which I think is embarrassing and makes me sad my mom should not still have to clean my room… I just cant manage on top of everything in a strict week

Are you in college, or high school? Is there a way you can reduce your work load so that you have time to manage your stuff?

Sometimes when I'm about to do a task that I don't enjoy I make it a game. I set a timer and race against the clock.

Sorry if I am overloading you with information. I came up with some questions that might give you some direction.

  1. What kind of person do you want to become?

  2. What 3 habits will lead you to become that person?

  3. Which one of those habits will be the easiest to start?

  4. How will you make that habit obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying?

No need to answer here. I recommend making an appointment with yourself to jot down your ideas.
