Appreciation post for those who push us in the right direction

This year, after years of suffering without even being aware of the problem, I finally got diagnosed with GAD (generalised anxiety disorder). I had been able to cope for a while but university just tipped me over the edge. I came from a "if-it-isn't-killing-you-you're-fine" family, who try to just keep going through problems, and for a while I was able to do that, but eventually all the pushing away of feelings caught up to me.

I was too anxious to go to the doctors for help, but that year I made a new friend. She made me realise how bad I had gotten with my overthinking and panic, and encouraged me to seek help. She helped me write down all the things I wanted to say to the doctor so I wouldn't forget anything, and even drove me and came with me into my first appointment as support, and was ready to step in if I was struggling to speak.

Without her, I never would have gotten the meds that got me through my second year of uni. Without her I wouldn't be on the waiting list for therapy. Without her I wouldn't be on the road to healing. I wouldn't have the comfort of a friend who has been there and done that, and can act as my guide.

Use this post to share some stories about the people who pushed you in the right direction. Lets have some appreciation for the people who guided us when all the lights were out, and for the ones who made us see clearly for the first time in years.

They are the heroes who do not wear capes, and I am grateful for every single one of them.

@WinterWren11Thank you for sharing such a powerful story. It’s amazing how much a supportive friend can change our path when we’re struggling. Who has been that guiding light in your life? How did they help you find your way through your darkest moments?

@WinterWren11

You should feel blessed to be so lucky to have such a caring friend like that. Oh how better we all and this world would be if we all had friends like the one you described.

Let’s have some appreciation for the people who guided us when all the lights were out, and for the ones who made us see clearly for the first time in years.”

The unfortunate, yet honest truth is such a thing does not exist for me nor has it ever existed for me. Not in the real world. I’ve always been shut out or left out, held back, discouraged, put down, etc.

So the only person who’s constantly guided me through all the darkest times, who always gets me to see things clearly when I don’t, and the reason why I am who I am and why I’ve survived through everything I’ve survived through, is me. So I have always appreciated and always shown appreciation in addition to other things like support and care and all that for myself. I don’t always credit myself but I always tell myself that I’m happy and/or proud of myself when I do something that makes me happy and/or proud.
