How to Calm Anxiety or Panic Attacks- "Happy Safe Place" using 5 senses

Feeling anxious of the now and future can be overwhelming.  Feeling the pounding of your heart, worry and severe anxiety is a result of anxiety.

One best technique I've learned to help ease panic attacks and anxiety is called Safe Happy Place.- using your 5 senses, and this can be mix matched with practice.

Step 1- Imagine your favorite happy place, it could be the beach, time with a loved one, nature, being at home, its your happy place, so you can even imagine a new happy place (be creative or find something grounding for you)

Step 2- Using your 5 senses, see 👀, touch 🤚, taste 👅,  hear👂 and smell👃, you will visualize these things in your happy place and its best to be as specific as possible!

Step 3- Put into practice!  See- I imagine a beach 🏝️ (because it reminds me of home and when I'm there I feel at peace).  Next, I'll imagine 5 things I see at the beach: endless blue ocean waves, palm trees swaying, people laughing and jumping into the water, my toes in the sand, and the hot sun beaming on me.

Step 4- Touch 4 things- I can feel the gritty white sand between my toes, I can feel that the sun is hot on my face, I feel beads of sweat, when I dive into the ocean, I feel how cool and crisp the water is, and I can feel the wind breezing through, as the palm trees shake.

Step 5- Taste- 3 things- I can taste the salt air in my mouth, I can taste a cool drink of water as its so hot, and I can taste how refreshing and yet salt the ocean water is as I jumped in.

Step 6- Hear- 2 things- I hear the ocean waves swishing as it hits the edge of sand and laps back up into the sea, and I can hear laughter from the people around me having fun!

Step 7- Smell- 1 thing- I can smell the fresh air mixed in with the saltiness of the ocean and when I breathe in deep, I smell the sunscreen, sand, ocean and everything that reminds me I am safe and at home.

** Try this technique out, and you can mix and match the senses any way you want, it could be 5 things you smell, or 3 things you see- the choice is you! Update me on how this works for you!  Have fun in your Safe Happy Place**

When I was in therapy, my therapist taught me something similar when I had a panic attack right in her office!

Basically, she had me imagining myself eating an orange!  Noticing how the texture of it on my fingertips and the color of the peel. And then, when I peel it, imagine what smells and sounds are happening. And when I imagine myself eating it, what does it taste like?

It really helped!

Thanks for the reminder!!!

Mmm now I want to taste an orange!  I'm glad you've heard of this too, and I feel it really helps me and some members when our mind is just overwhelmed!
