Anxiety
Seem to be calming down with anxiety but I've had one bad night of not being able to sleep 4 nights ago now its taking me 2 to 3 hours to get to sleep and waking up early is this normal?
Hello,
When it comes to falling asleep, research suggests that it takes about 20 minutes of lying down for this to occur.
In saying that, everyone is different, so classifying it as “normal” or “not normal” is not the case.
My first question is for these other nights, are you also experiencing anxiety, which is resulting in the delayed sleep time?
If you find it is due to the anxiety, one method I love to use is the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique. It consists of using all 5 senses to help redirect our focus, and for myself in most cases, it helps me fall asleep! 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste.
If you find you cannot sleep easy even when your anxiety is at ease, you can even do the Stimulus Control Therapy. This technique is used to help train your body and mind to associate bed with sleep only. What you would do is if you find yourself awake for more than the 10-20 minute time period it takes on average to fall asleep, you would get out of bed and do other quiet, non stimulating activities before you return to bed and try again.
I wish you all the best on your sleep journey! :)
