Constantly feel I can never measure up

Just got some gentle feedback from a boss and despite being encouraging it’s triggering all sorts of anxiety, fear and demotivation.

I’m 7 months into a semi-career switch but it just seems all the other new joiners are well adjusted and doing well. I have such anxiety around disappointing, that I get avoidant and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Honestly afraid of the apparently great things that I was hired to do.

TLDR feeling pressure to up my game and conversely its making me anxious and want to just give up

It’s completely normal to feel anxious after receiving feedback, even if it’s encouraging. And switching careers can be really challenging, especially when it feels like everyone else is adjusting smoothly.

Remember, everyone has their own journey and it’s okay to feel unsure. That pressure can really weigh you down but remember, it doesn’t define who you are or what you’re capable of. Instead of focusing on the fear of disappointing, try to see this as a chance to learn and grow.

You’ve got this!

It’s challenging feeling like that, especially when comparing oneself to others. You’re not alone, I’m also guilty of putting undue pressure on myself when given feedback. The perfectionist in me doesn’t like negative feedback one bit 🤣

You mention is causes your anxiousness that in turn makes you want to give up. Perhaps re-framing could be useful and questioning/talking back to your inner critic with positive thoughts. Also, I find turning comparison into inspiration helps. I sometimes think, “oh THAT person can do, can’t be that hard then" 😂
