Detachment
When you get overwhelmed and feel the need to detach from life what do you need from your loved ones? I want to make sure I handle things the way my person needs.

It sounds to me like your person has asked for space. I think the thing to do is to acknowledge that request, respect/support that request and make it clear that you are there for them. Maybe something like
"I hear you want space. I'm going to just sit here and do xyz/go in the other room and do xyz/go home/whatever suits the situation. I love you and I'm looking forward to the time when you are ready to reconnect."
But it really depends on the person. Some would like you to hold them in silence. Others to be present but occupied eg reading a book. Others don't even want to know you exist. You need to find our from your person, really.
It’s not necessarily that she has asked for space it’s that feeling of being overwhelmed that makes her close off so maybe the anxiety goes away. This only happens when her anxiety goes off the rails. I always ask what she needs but she doesn’t always have an answer in these times. So I wanted to hear from other people who battle severe anxiety what helps them when they are so overwhelmed they shut down. I’m hoping maybe to stumble upon something that maybe she’s never thought of that can help ease the anxiety faster so she doesn’t feel so overwhelmed for so long.
