Fear of taking pills or side effects

I’m afraid of taking medication. I feel as though I won’t be able to swallow it. I’m worried about the side effects. I’m not usually very allergic, and I didn’t used to have these fears. Once, a painkiller felt like it was getting stuck in my throat, and after that I started to panic. Is there anyone else here like me? How did you get through it? For example, I’m in pain right now, but I don’t want to take anything because I’m afraid—what if I can’t swallow it, or what if it causes an allergic reaction?

I hope you feel better soon. I wasn't a fan of pills when I was younger either. I either looked for a liquid version. Dissolved them in water or drank something first to lubricate my throat, tried to relax, tilted my head way back and popped it down as far as I could.

Nowadays I turn to healing binaural beats on Youtube, mostly it works, sometimes it doesn't but it's a good alternative.

I’m not exactly young, unfortunately – I’m 36:(

I didn’t used to be this sensitive. As I’ve got older, I’ve started to feel more anxious. Thank you so much; it’s been a real comfort to know I’m not alone. If you have a link to the video you mentioned, could you send it to me?

@forcefulGrapefruit5426 no problem, we change sometimes and it's part of life. Binaural beats is very vast so you load youtube and type in for example headaches binaural beats or whatever your condition is and a list of videos will pop up and you can play it in the background.

Not on low, mid volume is better. You don't have to use headphones, that's up to you. Sometimes I have to search a few videos and find the one that helps.

It can be instant or take a while :)

Binaural beats have been helpful – thank you for your advice. How did you manage to overcome this? I’d like to get past this too.

@forcefulGrapefruit5426 I'm glad it was useful for you in the end. I think mostly I just relaxed and then I got to a point, where I personally chose natural remedies but that's my own thing and you'll do whatever is best for you :)

@forcefulGrapefruit5426

There are just some people who have difficulty taking pills.  It's not something you should feel bad or ashamed about, no matter what age.  I struggled through my teens before I was able to take a pill.  I know others who got into their 20s before they could do it.

As far as pain relief goes, Tylenol does have liquid (and there are store brand equivalents) but they also have these little dissolving powder packs that work really well.  Maybe you can try them.

@forcefulGrapefruit5426 Hey friend… I’ve seen people with this kind of fear around medications.. my mother used to feel the same too.

Just a few thoughts that might help. First, check if the medicine is truly necessary or essential. If it is, then try to slowly let go of the fear of an allergic reaction, take a few deep breaths, calm yourself, and prepare your mind before taking it.

Also, since you mentioned difficulty in taking it directly, you could try placing the tablet inside a piece of banana and swallowing it. I’m not sure how it works for everyone, but my mother used to do this and it helped her.

Hope this gives you a little comfort. Take care 🤍
