Life challenges being a single mom
Hey guys, I’m new to the platform. I’m a single mom who survived and escaped a domestic violence relationship. We’re now living at my parents where I was abused by them as a kid and being an adult with my own child in their house has brought up old lingering feelings. Also them subjecting my daughter to the same up and down treatment and name calling. It’s been hard being unemployed and having to rely on a network built on deflection and finger pointing. Idk if you guys have any tips or quotes to help us get through this hard time. Or any ideas for me to make money remotely to have a cushion for when we can leave once court with our abuser is finalized.

Welcome to this space. I want to acknowledge how incredibly brave you are for choosing to leave. Breaking free from abuse takes so much strength. Leaving while protecting your little one shows exactly the kind of fierce, devoted mother you are. Please know that your feelings are entirely valid. Stepping back into a childhood home where you were hurt is bound to bring up those old, painful echoes, and it makes complete sense that you are feeling overwhelmed right now.
You are doing the absolute best you can in a difficult transition, and surviving each day is a massive victory. It is so hard to watch your child experience the same hurt you went through, but the fact that you recognize it means you are breaking the cycle. You are giving your daughter the gift of seeing her mother stand up for herself and refuse to accept mistreatment.
When things feel too heavy, try to take it just one moment at a time. Remind yourself that successful mothers are not the ones who never struggle, but the ones who keep showing up despite the exhaustion. You do not have to have everything figured out today. One of my favorite reminders is that healing is not linear, and it is okay to have messy days while you are rebuilding your life.
Regarding remote work, there are some avenues you can explore to build that cushion. Many survivors find success in freelance writing, virtual assisting, or data entry on platforms like Upwork or Freelancer. You could also research remote customer service roles on job boards like Indeed or FlexJobs, which often offer flexible hours. If you have a knack for organization, offering services as a remote bookkeeper or social media manager for small businesses are other great ways to generate income from home while keeping your child close.
I am sending you so much peace, courage, and love for your court proceedings to go completely your way, with protection and safety for you, and hopefully avenues for you to be able to live in a less triggering living arrangement. If you put your professional background or hobbies online with the search term remote job ideas, you may find even more remote job ideas that match your skills. There also may be domestic violence survivor housing options where you live. If you’re international, going through the flow chart provided by https://findahelpline.com/
might give some ideas. If you’re in the USA, there’s another site, http://findhelp.org/
that might give some specific ideas and resources.
