Started a new job

I started a new job at a retail store and I haven’t been getting trained properly. I’ve been cashing out customers myself or on my own and bagging clothes so wrong. I can’t take off metal detector tags off articles of clothes because no one is really explaining it to me I’m just sort of trying to wing it. One of the customers complained and said could I get a different cashier I know it’s silly but, I held in a cry now I kind of want to cry.. & now I can’t quit cause my brother & my mother want me to stay and keep trying

Congratualions on the new job!

And also, congratulations on achieving so much with just winging it! I know it's hard when you are not getting the help you need. And of course it hurts when someone notices that we are not doing as they think we should be doing. But, in all that, please don't overlook the success! You are figuring it out on your own! In the circumstances, do you think you are being fair to yourself in focusing on this one comment? Or could you notice how conscientious you are being in caring so much about doing a good job? Which do you think is more valuable?  Someone who wants to learn and improve and makes the occasional mistake or someone who naturally does well but doesn't care?

Take your time to improve. You're worth it.

Maybe you could ask your boss or another cashier to show you the ropes, it's not fair, expecting you to just know, without showing you.

It takes us all time to learn new things and adapt to new environments.

I'm sorry you cried but I hope it changes for the better 💚

@quickwittedSummer3392 Hi Summer, sorry you went through that. In my first retail job, I was so confused and also kept dropping things. In another job I also had a few not nice customers who complained and that upset me. Your feelings are normal, alot of people go through things like this when they're new. You'll likely start finding your job easier with practice. Please dont blame yourself for complaining customers, alot are just having a bad day. You're new and  dont deserve for Anyone to complain about you while you're still learning. Hope things start feeling better and go well for you. 💛
