Tips on how to talk to someone with anxiety
Dear listeners
Talking to someone with anxiety can be tricky. Many people with anxiety easily get overwhelmed when they feel seen or heard, and can pull away from conversations because of that. It’s not about needing space because you said something wrong it’s more about their subconscious doubting whether they can sustain the presence of others for too long, so they pull away before it happens. Try to be consistent with check-ins during silence, and be patient if you can.
1. Be mindful of how you offer support. Avoid saying “If you want me, I’ll always be here.” It can make someone with anxiety feel emotionally incapable. Instead, say: “You’re strong, but I can be an addition to that strength.”
2. Don’t project feelings.Swap “This must be making you feel sad or drained” with “How are you feeling right now?” People with anxiety may not feel negative until it’s suggested and then it sticks.
3. Let them lead emotionally. Instead of assuming or ask questions and flow with what they tell you personally. It helps them feel safe and in control🤗..this are my thoughts based on personal experiences please feel free to share yours for more awareness
@Fateemahzahara Thank you for sharing your insights
I like the approach on sharing with the person your own value so you are one of the warriors in their life - good work!
Thanks for the refreshing take
The individual may think you are trying to be polite if you say "if you need anything let me know." You acknowledge that not everyone is great at talking about their feelings or just that they are disconnected and may not be a feelings person
That's really sensitive and intuitive of you. I have anxiety and I am grateful to read your approach. Thanks for caring so much 💗
