✨Today Thoughts: Take a risk or stay in your comfort zone?✨

💚Hello wonderful humans! I hope you’re doing alright!

Today, I wanted to raise a discussion. Staying inside our comfort zones or taking a risk?
(I already made a post solely on comfort zones, you can find it here!) 👻👀

⁂I returned to learning a language on duolingo after about a year and a half. I started again and managed to keep a two month streak. But here’s what actually happened:

⁂After a lot of effort and dedication, I finally managed to make it to the last league, diamond. I was there for three weeks, but due to my primary focus on finals, I lost it. A pop up opened that I can get back to my own league to continue keeping my perfect diamond streak for 2000 gems. At that time, the gems I gathered from two months of constant learning was about 2500. However, I did it~ I gave pretty much a huge deal of my gems to keep my perfect streak. After that, I was pretty much demotivated from giving the gems away, I felt empty handed. I ended up losing my diamond streak, as well as pretty much all of my gems.

⁂I know this isn’t a big deal compared to many other situations in our lives, but it got me thinking.
When to take a risk and when not? What are the factors? How can I decide what’s best for me and don’t end up regretting, even if I don’t succeed? I wanted to search about it, and I decided to share with the anxiety community as well!

⁂You take risks regularly, from backing your car into the street to trying a new restaurant. Whether you love adventure or you always focus on what could go wrong, I want to see how risks can be evaluated beforehand. You can often ask, “A year from now, what will I most regret not doing?”

✨Here’s how it goes:

⁛Some risks are based on how much pleasure you will gain, such as choosing an exotic vacation, buying a new car, or getting a new tattoo. Dan Gilbert says in Stumbling on Happiness, there’s no way to predict how you will feel in the future. You can look at what value you will get from taking the risk and then weigh that against the value of not doing it. There's no guarantee you will feel happier but you will be clearer about what you might gain.

⁛Other risks are based on relieving present discomfort, or perhaps achieving higher goals! Although you feel frustrated, resentful, or bored, you shouldn’t take a risk just because you don’t like what you have now. You need to be clear on what you want instead so you know the risk will move you forward.

✨Taking the risk, or staying in my comfort zone?

Deciding whether to stay in your comfort zone or take a risk depends on several factors, including your goals, values, and current circumstances. Here are some points to consider:

💚Benefits of Staying in Your Comfort Zone:

1. Stability: It provides a sense of security and predictability.

2. Reduced Stress: Familiar environments and routines can lower anxiety.

3. Focus on Mastery: You can deepen your skills and knowledge in a particular area.

💚Benefits of Taking a Risk:

1. Growth Opportunities: Risks can lead to personal and professional development.

2. New Experiences: Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to exciting and rewarding experiences.

3. Increased Resilience: Facing challenges can strengthen your ability to cope with future difficulties.

✨Factor to consider when taking a risk:

There’s lots of factors to take into consideration when deciding whether to take a risk or not. Remember, nobody can make you take a risk that you’re not ok with.

Sometimes you don’t spend much time thinking about it. It can happen in a few seconds, especially when we’re put on the spot and have to make a decision right away.

💚You might rely on gut instinct to decide. Or, if you have the time to think before you take a risk, you might think about taking these steps.

1. Self-Assessment: Evaluate your current situation, including your emotional and financial stability. Are you in a position where you can handle potential setbacks?

*Asking yourself these questions:

`What might happen to me and people around me?

`Will it impact my school/ work?

`Will it affect my friendships or family? `Am I comfortable with this?

2. Opportunities: Look for moments when opportunities align with your goals. This could be a new job, a relationship, or a creative endeavor.

3. Research and Preparation: Ensure you have enough information about the risk you're considering. This includes understanding potential outcomes, benefits, and downsides.

4. Support System: Consider whether you have a support network to help you navigate the consequences of your risk-taking. This could be friends, family, or mentors. It is better to talk through options with someone who will not be affected by your choice.

5. Timing: Sometimes, external circumstances can influence the right moment. Economic conditions, personal life events, or market trends can all play a role.

6. Intuition and Passion: Trust your instincts. If you feel strongly about a decision and it aligns with your values and passions, it might be the right time to take a leap.

*Try the Coin Trick. Assign your options to heads or tails. Flip the coin. The moment you see the result, are you disappointed or relieved? The trick might help you uncover what you really want to do.

7. Calculated Risks: Aim for risks that have a good balance of potential reward and manageable downside. This often means having a clear plan and backup strategies in place.

*The circle of control: “Is this something that I can affect the outcome on, or is this beyond my control.” Said by the wise @AnnaSilverberg.

8. Be honest about what could go wrong:  Don't ignore hazards. When you look at possible problems, how would you handle them? Consider bad outcomes, determine the likelihood they will happen, and what you would do next.

✨Conclusion:

🍀A good decision comes from knowing yourself well.
When you know your limits and what you’re comfortable with, it can lead to easier decision making.

🍀Sometimes it’s good to take a risk when it pushes you outside of your comfort zone and helps you achieve a healthy goal.

🍀At other times, taking risks can have serious negative consequences on our health, relationships, or education.

🍀No matter what you decide, you will encounter difficulties. You will question your choices. You may even find your choice was just a step to the next as you create many chapters in your life.

💕In my case, I think I learnt better about when to take a risk, and when not; In duolingo, as well as in my personal life. We’re all a work in progress, and improving and learning by each step of our journey. Choose your pace, your line between comfort zone and risk taking, and I am sending the most awesome beams along your way.

✨Questions (You can answer to any or all of the questions, solely talk about your take on this discussion, or just say hi! )

👻1. Can you share a specific experience where you took a risk/ stayed in your comfort zone? What was the outcome, and how did it change your perspective?

👻2. In what ways can staying in your comfort zone be beneficial? Are there circumstances where you feel it's important to remain within those boundaries?

👻3. What kinds of risks do you believe are worth taking in life? How do you determine which risks are worth pursuing?

👻4. How can you prepare yourself to take calculated risks in the future? What strategies can you put in place to minimize potential downsides? What are the factors you take into consideration?

👻5. How do societal expectations influence your willingness to take risks? How does the presence of others in a group impact your decision to take risks?

🎉🎉*Fun Zone* If you could take one big risk without the fear of failure, what would it be, and why? How do you envision your life changing as a result? Let's daydream!

Thank you for taking the time and energy to compose this thread.

I find taking any risks daunting.

Honestly, I’m trying to do better, but I’m such a creature of habit.

it's my pleasure! i feel that, stepping out of comfort zones are tough. have you found any way to make a risk easier? maybe start doing small, like trying a new restaurant, or even a different brand of a product you use?

@daydreammemories thank you. I wish to take risk of higher education, but fear failure, and losing people emotionally close to me. I wish to be closer to them as well. I don't know how to deal with this.

@notjustsomeone

I understand. Every risk we take feels like a loose step that can make us fall or get higher. And it is very hard to decide what to do💚
