Unstable Work History

Hi,

I haven't had a stable job in over three years. Every time I get a job something happens and I lose the job. I feel like a failure. I've tried everything I can. It doesn't help that my experience is in a field that is very specialized and competitive.

Lately I've been looking for positions outside my field that would be related, but those are few and far between.

Today I found one on a job board that would not only be great it would be perfect. I applied for it, but then I sat here and obsessed about my chances of getting the job. It went on for so long and so intensely that I ended up driving myself to tears and thinking about hurting myself.

I talked to a listener here and feel better for now, but I'm having a difficult time understanding a way how I can control my emotions when things get that bad. I feel like a total failure for not having a job for so long and I am also struggling financially. It is just difficult when things get that bad.

Thanks for listening.

Hi there. Sorry to hear this, it does sound stressful. Just a thought, but would it be possible to perhaps apply for a temporary role? Once you’ve got your foot in the door, and they see what a good worker you are, they won’t let you go. Also sometimes other jobs come up in the same company, and you will hear about them first.

@RainbowRosie

Sorry, pressed too soon. Also wanted to add, you’re not a loser, these things can take time unfortunately. Keep reaching out, there’s always someone here to chat with 🌹

If you can try and cut yourself a break as you are clearly trying your best. Would it help if every day you make a plan of what you intend to achieve each day and then follow through, but make it realistic and do stop for breaks and relaxation, you are not a machine but a human being.

Also in your field or adjacent to it, maybe you could find a mentor, that could guide you and maybe let you know about opportunities arising or help with your confidence?
