I recently developed a panic disorder around Christmas. I've never been depressed or anything before so this all very new to me. I was prescribed prozac daily and its been 6 weeks and I'm still feeling anxious and a bit off. Does anyone have experience with this? I want to wait it out but I'm not sure how long it takes to help.

@SuperNovak I've read that medication like Prozac doesn't work well for everyone, and people often have to try several different medications so they can find one that works for them. Maybe that's something you could discuss with your doctor?

I am also trying to decide whether or not to take medication. I am adverse to it, tbh. I want to avoid as much as possible. But my panic attacks can be so unpredictable. If I am triggered, I can have 4 panic attacks a day and it is so debilitating. Considering a benzo on an as needed basis...really don’t want want to take something daily :/

@affectionateOrange9551 For what it's worth, I know people who have found that a benzo strictly as needed works well.

@affectionateOrange9551

That is how I use mine, if taken quick enough it can ease the length and severity.

Thank you @SuperNovak. That is so helpful. I think I will ask my primary care about it.

I talked to my primary care physician. She was very reluctant to prescribe me even a small amount of benzo. She wanted to instead try Propranolol & Vistaril on an as needed basis. Has anyone ever tried these?

@affectionateOrange9551 Ah yes, I think they are often scared about the possibility of addiction to a benzo, or that it could be stolen and sold illegally.

I know someone who took propranolol at times, and I think it worked for them. Vistaril I've never heard of, and I know nothing about it.

@affectionateOrange9551

Vistaril- Hydroxyzine by generic name works for some people as a daily, it just has some unwanted side effects if you're a weight gainer. But, knowing that going in is an advantage.

@SuperNovak I was on different medications for my anxiety/panic attacks. I tried it out for a couple of months and found that I didn't like how I felt. It felt like I was someone else in my body.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm at 6 weeks and I think I'm giving it 12 weeks before I make a decision. It's helped in some ways but I'm still not myself. It's draining! What did you end up doing to naturally help the problem? Any tips?

I was ready to give up on the antidepressants after about 6 weeks then all of a sudden about 4 days ago I finally felt back to normal. Woke up with no panic, no anxiety. I was in a great mood and I finally had my motivation back. I guess I just needed time to adjust. 6 weeks of hell but I'm glad I stuck with it.

I take Zoloft and vistaril as needed up to two times a day! They both seem to work well! I also use grounding skills to help with my anxiety! Grounding is a skill that brings your mind to the present using your 5 senses and it can be done virtually anywhere!
