Should I get medication for my panic disorder?
My counselor and I have been discussing the possiblity of me seeing a psychiatrist to start medication for treatment for my panic disorder. I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to go on meds or not.
I have panic attacks on a daily basis and the attacks (plus my constant anxiety) distrub my daily life. I can't hang out with friends without having an attack, I can barely leave my house for fear of triggering an attack, I had to ask for less hours at work because I keep having attacks while working and couldn't talk to customers. I've been trying meditation and breathing excersises, which helps with general anxiety, but doesn't help with the attacks.
The reasons I'm against getting medication is: getting addicted, dealing with the side effects, affording my medication, and I also fear that the medication wouldn't help. Maybe it would just be better if I continued counseling. After a while, I might feel better without meds.
@Fearlessdragon It sounds as though you have quite the decision on your hands. I am very sorry to hear that you have been struggling with this, It sounds like it has a big impact on your day to day and that can't be easy. I don't think we could tell you whether you should take meds or not. I feel like that is a decision you need to make once you have gathered the information you need. Is this something you have discussed with your couselor? I hear your hesistations and they are valid. Perhaps this is something you could discuss with them. Things like resources and financial aid that may be available to you, worries about addiction etc? I hope you're able to get the info you need to make an informed decision about whats best for you and that things get a little easier from there <3
@Fearlessdragon
Your reasons are valid, but think about it this way. Do you want to keep dealing with panic attacks to point that you cant leave your house? I know the thought of taking medication may seem scary but trust me its not that bad. Dont think about it as an addiction but more like something that helps you. Talk to your counselor more about your worries with taking medication.

@Fearlessdragon I would also check with the doctor to see if there are any medications that are not addictive that can be used.
