Anxiety about Dogs

I absolutely adore animals, to the point where I wanted to be a veterinarian for a long time. I always have. But recently, I was in the middle of a dog fight. I luckily only had injuries on one hand, and they weren’t severe enough to cause permanent damage. Everything health and safety wise has been taken care of, but it has been effecting me more than I thought it would. Every time it’s quiet, I think I hear growling or barking. Not only that, but I keep hearing people yelling or screaming, sounding panicked. I keep having nightmares and losing sleep because I’m so anxious. Every single time these things happen, I can’t help but rush out of the room and go check the whole house, just to make sure, even though I know that everything is taken care of so it won’t happen again. I can spend time with my dog for the most part without it effecting me, but the struggle with everything else is bothering me so much.

So, does anyone have any tips for me, to try and calm myself down when these things happen?

@lakekay

Hey there. I am sorry to hear about what has been happening. It is understandable that you would be feeling these things after a dog attack. I am glad you are able to still be around your own dog. What you went through is trauma and when you start to freak out like you described, it might be a good idea to try to ground yourself. Find something that connects you to the world out in front of you. How does that sound?
