Why do I pay so much attention to what people think of me when I i.e. take pictures on the street? Either of strangers or objects.

Do your best to pay attention to what you are doing. I know it's hard. Especially when you are doing something in public that people usually don't. As long as you know what you are doing and why you are doing it, then that's all that matters. Photography is a cool thing. Paying less attention to people takes practice, so just keep working on it.
