Frustrated with school accommodations

Hi,

I met with the Disability accommodations person today. She said she will be able to give some accommodations after a note from my doctor.

However, I just feel really angry at her and distrustful, like part of me just wanted to slap her. I guess mostly because she's in a position of power and I resent her for that and for taking so long to respond. I also feel angry that she said I need to learn "life skills " when I already told her that I have anxiety/depression and that is why I have trouble with sleep. It felt she still implied that I'm not acting like an adult or being responsible when I have a legal disability.

Also honestly I feel that the workload is exploitive and unhealthy and should be adjusted instead of just saying it's graduate level and handling it is being "responsible ".

Overall, I feel angry that people in these positions see themselves as being reasonable and that I'm the crazy one without owning ways they are oppressive.

Day

Ps. Please only respond with supportive comments or don't respond. Being angry is valid.

@Daydreamer47 I think the disability center workers (or whatever it is there) tend to be fairly swamped for the first few weeks, so the long response time I would try not to hold that against anyone quite yet, unless you know they were just delaying.

You made it to grad school, so the life skills comment does seem really odd. You clearly have some good skills, getting through undergrad and being accepted into a grad program.

In general, I found that grad school acommodations really lacked in comparison to undergrad, especially for research based (vs course based) programs.

I hope that you do get reasonable accomodations for your needs!

@Daydreamer47 I feel like if I had a physical illness like diabetes or something, people wouldn't make comments like "you should work on time management"; it would be understood the person is having trouble getting to things because they're really sick. When it's a mental issue, they are more likely to not empathize and see it as an issue of being "a responsible adult".
