How do I stop touching my hair

It's not trich but I keep touching my hair because it's wavy. I feel the waves and I'm like ooh nice and I keep doing it, but it becomes pervasive to the point where I'll stop doing stuff in order to do it, or I'll like make my arm sore from being up in that position that long. I noticed it only comes along in situations of anxiety, but considering there aren't many times where I'm completely calm, what do I do?

Hi @Eliell! Thanks so much for coming to Anxiety Support and sharing your concerns with us. heart Let me assure you that we are all here to help.

I too have wavy hair and sometimes I can find myself doing this as well. It doesn't seem to be to the same degree as yours because my arm never gets tired or hurts, but I can still relate. I guess something I can relate better with is the fact that, for whatever reason, running soft objects under my nose has always calmed me. As a baby, I used to take the tags of my stuffed animals and run them under my nose to soothe myself. When I grew older and my anxiety kicked in even worse, I started using the hair on my wrist and arm as a substitute. I found that finding something else to direct my attention to helped me a lot. Nowadays, I almost always need to have my hands moving. I keep them busy with fidgets, tapping, or really anything else you can think of.

I don't know your situation entirely and therefore I can't give you a straight answer as to what steps you should take to overcome touching your hair so much, but what worked for me was trying to find something new to put my energy into. You could also try and keep your hair up more often so that it isn't there as much for you to touch if it's really bothersome to you.

Best of luck to you on overcoming this challenge. heart
