Never Feeling Safe at Night
I moved to a new country almost 8 months ago, and lately I have trouble feeling safe in my own home or anywhere else I have to sleep alone. When my partner is with me, it isn't quite as bad, but is still present. Has anyone experienced feelings of not being safe in your own home? The only thing I can think of that started this is the fire alarm in my building. Its faulty and has false alarms sometimes (last one was at 2:30 in the morning and it triggered a pretty bad panic attack.)

Can you analyze your sense of fear to identify what more specifically is causing it? Like, what are you afraid OF?

@shoto393 I think I'm afraid of there actually being a fire. A good majority of people don't even leave the building anymore when the alarm goes off, but I do every time. It sends me into a panic and I'm shaking and I cant get back to sleep anymore. I've already identified that alot of my anxiety stems from not being "in control". I cant control when the alarm is going to go off (real or not), and I can't control what other people do in their apartments that could possibly be hazardous. I feel nearly the exact same way about flying as a passenger, something I used to genuinely love doing as I come from a family of pilots...

I'm no expert, but I'd say first off, get yourself a fire extinguisher to have in your living space. Then, keep reminding yourself that nothing bad is happening to you RIGHT NOW. I have a horrible history of abuse and trauma, but I have found it very helpful to consciously remind myself that nothing bad is happening to be at this moment. I can't control much of the future, but I can actively remind myself that I am fine in this moment.
I tend to be more pragmatic. Did you talk to the labd lord/building admin to fix it? I don't know in what country you live but next time it starts call the emergency services (like 911) and the authorities should fine them for the faulty alarm.
None of this works? Do you have any money? Find and pay an electrician to "fix" it for good...if nooone cares, tgere is no need for a faulty alarm so pay an electrician to "silence" it...
I am sad that you have to suffer like this...
