Overconscious of the "gaze"
I feel the whole "hide your bra straps it's visible" stuck with me since I was a kid, now I'm an adult but that kind of thought process still remains, and i don't know if it's a good or bad thing that it has.
I recently ordered underwear online and my mum kept waving it and checking it like "you should've got a size larger" and we have some men working at our house because we shifted. And my first thought was "quick don't do that someone might come in and see that"
And she was like "why do you care?"
And i just realised, why do I? Why am I so bothered if somebody sees those inner wear, it's not like I'm naked, it's just a normal piece of clothing. This is again similar to how I like staying braless at home but I'm scared of answering the door in case it's a man I don't know and he eyes my "nips" or something is visible that I don't see. I wish I didn't care, "yes i have boobs! Yes i have nipples! This is normal" but i can't help it and i find myself being more conscious than other women around me. I hide it like no other 🥲
I'm sorry I hope i dont sound like a narcissist or something :(

Also, definitely not narcissistic!!! <3
I remember having these feelings when I was first starting puberty. My mom was way too excited about it. She told everyone; all her sisters, my older sister and my sister-in-law, people at work, probably random people she met too. I absolutely hated it, and I hated that I had to wear bras and that people knew I was wearing them. I think I waited like a year or more before I told her I got my period. I would never change in front of her or my sisters or even my friends even though we were all girls. I didn't even feel comfortable wearing bikinis in public for the longest time.
I think the way that we are treated by others, especially our mothers or people close to us, can greatly impact how we view and carry ourselves. I still have little thoughts sometimes like someone is going to say something about my body parts or underwear, mostly my mom, because I had a lot of anxiety about it when I was growing up. She still makes comments sometimes but I've learned to deal with it. I've also talked to her about it, and in just general to not tell everyone about my personal life without my consent.
I don't think it's fair for someone else to dictate what we should or shouldn't care about, or how we should or shouldn't feel about something. I think if you feel uncomfortable with how your mother approaches a situation, she should know not to do it. I would not want random men to see my underwear. I think you should have the freedom to dress how you feel comfortable.
Thank you so much for your reply, it really means a lot.
I guess in relation to what you said i don't know what I want to be, i guess I would've liked it if i was more chill about those things and i want to blame the society for making me feel so conscious about things like this. But i guess I can just say it is how it is and just accept myself.
Also how in recent days going braless and all is seen as empowering etc I just wished I could be them I envy them, but personally it's hard for me to not care. I sometimes wish i could be covered with a paper bag or something...and it makes me feel worse when people say I'm "overreacting" "nobody is even looking"

I'm sorry you're going through this, I've had that thought before answering the door if it's a dude. I don't think you are overreacting at all. People say they don't care all the time when they do. We have our reasons to cover up and not want people to see bras/underwear. I think stick to what makes you feel comfortable!!!!
and with your mom swinging the bra around, I've had a similar experience where I mistakenly asked my uncle to put my laundry in the dryer. He texted me "Should I dry your Big Red Bra? Maybe i'll give it to your cousin to run around the house with". It's uncomfortable, so definitely I agree with the other person who replied as well, just let her know your boundaries with stuff like that if you haven't already. Hang in there!
