Stressing about driving
Hi! So, Im still a new driver, I only got my license last year, so I guess this might be something all new drivers struggle with? But I cant seem to stop torturing myself by imagining worst-case-scenario yellow lights.
What I mean by that, is yellow lights that Im far enough away from that it could change to red before I go through, but that Im close enough to where braking for it means braking kind of hard (not hard enough to squeal the brakes, but not gentle and easy braking either). I get these sudden yellow lights often, and it always stresses me out.
I know about the trick where you look at the walk sign, and if the hand is flashing that means itll change to yellow soon, but it doesnt seem to help, and theres areas that dont have the walk sign. I never know when Im too close to stop, or when I should go through. Im worried about running a red light, but Im also worried about getting rear-ended.
Any advice for yellow lights? Or calming down and not imagining these things? Stressing out about this isnt helping me, but I cant seem to stop thinking about this.

Hey! It takes some time before driving feels comfortable and then, years before driving becomes second nature. Ive seen many posts about anxiety on the road— and it makes sense, driving cars can be really intimidating. Ive been driving for 14 years and I can still recall how nervous I was to merge onto freeways and about not knowing the nuances of the road— like dealing with fast-changing yellow lights.
Every intersections light system is different. You might notice some yellow lights change faster than others, etc. These are some tips that you may find helpful:
Go the speed limit. If theres rain/snow/bad weather, go slower. If you have time to stop, stop. If stopping would require slamming on your breaks to come to an immediate hault, then Id personally push forward through without hesitation but with much caution! Pay attention to your cross walks and other drivers on the road. For instance, there could be someone turning left/right into your lane from the side roads, thinking youre about to stop for your red light. ** Paying attention to drivers that arent just driving next to you, but all around you. ** Defensive driving is so important. This all may sound tough because it is, and it is because its a huge responsibility. But, we all overcome these fears and get used to driving with time and I have total faith in you!
Make wise decisions. Be safe out there. Always buckle up! :p
