Waking Up with Anxiety
Hi,
For about the past month, I wake up every morning with my heart rate elevated and a case of the jitters, like my body is on high alert. Sometimes it will last only 10-15 minutes, other times it can last a few hours. Once it goes away I am fine for the rest of the day but the cycle continues once I go to bed and wake up the next day. I feel like I am almost to the point of feeling normal again after a year dealing with GAD and learning how to control it. I dont know why this has been happening and I really want it to stop. I feel frustrated with my mind and body and I just want my old self back.
Hello.
This is Pinky, maybe I can help you.
When it happens, what does your mind think about the most? From past experience, myself, I worried about my grades and whether or not I passed them, I used to lay wide awake thinking what I could done better at that time instead of getting up and getting ready for school. (maybe that is why I was always tardy.)
Now I don’t have to worry about grades for myself, now I give out grades.

Hi,
I think subconsciously it had to do with going to work since it seems to happen during the week. i am going to pay attention this weekend to see if it happens.
Thanks for the reply

Hello,
You have my sympathy. I empathise with your situation as I am also subject to a similiar circumstance; Most nights awaking from deep sleep to a sudden hyper-alert state with my heart pounding, my ears ringing, and a vague and unidentifiable sense of danger. Even telling myself there is nothing wrong, it can take a long time to ease off and the disrupted sleep gradually takes a toll. I do not have any answers but i hope that knowing others are in the same boat might make it feel less isolating.

Oh? subconsciously sounds interesting, do you think whatever you did previously days go may affect what your mind might react on the days while you’re asleep?
subconsciously normally occurs while you are asleep, therefore you might have been overstimulated the day before that may have cause your anxiety attack. (maybe)
how do you feel now?

Hi, sorry for not getting back sooner. I have been busy and life has been good.
So this past weekend (Sat/Sun/Mon (holiday)) I didnt wake up feeling anxious like I have been. Tuesday it happened again. I have come to the thought that my anxiety is being tripped by the anticipation of the alarm clock going off. i oftern feel anxious when i am under a schedule rather than just being free to do what I want when I want.
It has actually made me feel better now that I can pin point what is happening. Everyday is getting better.
hello @702LVGal!
Glad to see you are keeping up.
Sorry we both couldn’t catch up, life tends to creep slowly behind us and take us away.
Glad to see you are doing well, anxiety isn’t always the best, but it does keep you on your toes especially when you are looking forward to an event uncoming like vacation or something away from homework.
Alarm clocks are great reminders to let us know, “Oh we have something to do that is important, let me set an alarm so I won’t be late!” (at least that is how I understood alarms)(speaking of which, thanks for reminding me to set one up for tomorrow morning. hehehehe)
sometimes anxiety for something you look forward to is a reminder that not everyday is the same boring routine, but something different and new, hopefully everything is different for you, and there are supportive people there willing to listen and help you.
have an enjoyable weekend!

I am experiencing the same thing for the past few weeks as well. For me it has specific time. I discussed with my psychiatrist about it and she said it is due to my anxiety. I researched about it and we are not alone in experiencing it. I am practicing some grounding techniques when it happens to me like butterfly hug and affirmations. I put it in my journal and it helps and for me to monitor what I was thinking and feeling and see if it has a pattern. It helped me reduce the nights when I wake up with elevated heartbeat. I wish you the best and hope both of us will get the deep sleep we both deserve.
